I thought the body exaggeration would make it more comic, but when I saw the finished movie I realized the sketches were probably roto'd, since there was little to no exaggeration in the movement. And yeah, I realize a fat cat wouldn't run quite like that, it was just a quick test. I may try a second one and really push the limits, get the body bobbling more.
The tail in what I was sketching didn't have much movement but secondary motion is one of the things I want to concentrate on.
I'm working on a project with a fat cat but I'm not planning on *doing* any animation, just getting familiar with the masses and how they move.
Robert, I'll add a supper dish in the last frame.
EDIT: here's the reference I was using: http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/55/...5543657fef3.jpg
SECOND EDIT: Jeez Nan, do something for that cat! It's a cat, right?

I copied these frames from a sketched run cycle I found with a Google search, but I changed the proportions of the cat to be fat with stubby legs, then made this quickie movie to see the end result.

Also: ALWAYS work on a copy or do a "save as" before messing with the file in a text editor.

Try hitting "Ctrl minus" once or twice, things might fit better.

I really like the "poses", with the slouch hats and ciggy-butts. It was like they wanted to show what these characters looked like loitering under a streetlight.

I clicked over to this link the other day and I should mention that Robert only posted two examples of maybe 20 or more. A real time capsule and well worth killing an hour or so!

One other point is that in the event Marigold is on a Mac, and depending on what version of AM is being used, it may work better to apply the animated decal in an action window.

That was a tough contest to vote in! Congratulations to all three winners.

That is way too cool! Thanks for posting, Robert!

those Tineola puppets are really amazing and your 3D creations are remarkable! thanks for sharing this, Tore!

Well for what it's worth, this link from Victor Navone's blog is what sent me there. There's some truly awesome character reference material, including a ton of Glen Keane's work which is all totally flawless and equally inspiring/intimidating.

Yes, "design" is spelled wrong, don't know what that's about. It is poor spelling? A lame pun? Both? No one knows.

I was looking at some character design reference and I thought if I signed up I would have access to a wider variety of content maybe? Can't tell if that's the case though.

Okay, so I've signed up on Pinterest and spent a couple of hours browsing some really terrific art and character designs, etc. but I'm not sure what you *do* over there except look at stuff. Am I supposed to "repin" stuff, and what's the point of that? "Follow" people? Not sure why. I see the same stuff repinned and repinned and it's not clear what the point of it all is, and/or what my part is, or why I should repin stuff that a dozen folks have already pinned. Not too much different from a Google search it seems.
Can anyone shed some light? Is there value to it that I'm not seeing?

Hilarious!

Okay, I'm in!

I will absolutely second recommending Barry Zundel's videos. Five bucks each. You can't go wrong!
-
I agree, tough to vote for just one! Great work from everyone.

I looked north briefly but we have too much light around here. We look south from our windows and have to go outside and walk a ways before we get any decent viewing, so may go put later(after midnight) and have another looksee.

I check in pretty regular over there and they're doing some nice work! Some years ago Mike organized a Meetup group down in Bklyn and we got well acquainted. Too bad he didn't stick with AM, but as I recall there were some things he could just do better in another app. I hope they get 'er done!

Amazing.

...and you NEVER see him and Clark Kent at the same time! Hmmm...
-
Nice work so far Chris! My one comment is that if you're planning on animating him, the chest logo may do better as decals (displacement and color) so you don't have to worry about assigning a bunch of cp's unnecessarily, and so that if you need to tweak it it could be done more easily as decals. Although the inprogress model may not look as cool!

Wow, that's a great project! I'm fudging, but it still has 20 days to go, so I plan on kicking in *sometime* in the next 20 days.

Back when I was actively reading Marvel comics, I was a much bigger fan of Ditko's. My reaction to Kirby was much like yours, Mark. But in later years when I understood what comic book art was really about, I had a greater appreciation for his approach, which was more about pure crackling energy than, e.g., accurate anatomy.
Also very interesting was the comment about Simon and Kirby creating the whole romance genre, and how that influenced the tone of Marvel's superhero stories. Superheroes falling in love and having their hearts broken! It was radical at the time.

Hi Gerry, nope I sketched these frames on paper then shot the as a stop-motion movie with my little Nikon. Pretty low tech!
I just tried a more elaborate "sneaky" walk cycle but got ahead of myself and messed it up, but I'll try to post more like this.
