  1. I just got the Studio 45 cd late last week and I must say it is a really awesome set of tutes! I haven't gotten to following along with a live project, just watching the movies first to get a grasp. However, they are excellent tutorials!

I guarantee you will learn a ton about boning and rigging.

Definitely worth the $45. It was a really good investment and I'm going back for their other cd's before long.

  2. Francois - I would say in general that if you're nearing completion on a project that may have a deadline, switching over *completely* may not be the best idea. However, if you save the project under a new name and keep both versions of AM on your computer, you're covered.

I've upgraded to 10.5 and it's really like a whole new world, many great features and way more stable. However I can't speak to its support of materials, dynamics, etc. If and when you upgrade, just don't leave yourself without a Plan b for getting your work done!

  3. As far as coloring a model like this, it can be extremely satisfying airbrushing it yourself if you have airbrush experience. You can get realistic color effects that are not achievable in any other way.

for most materials I would recommend regular acrylic paints. give it two coats with a hand brush to lay in the base colors, and when airbrushing details, approach it like you would stage lighting, i.e., color the top surfaces lighter than bottom surfaces, and spray on specular highlights to simulate reflections. If you paint it "flat" and expect the form itself to create lights and darks it won't be as nice, even if it's got a glossy finish.

When you're finished, give it several coats of spray acrylic varnish, and I guarantee your goldurn eyes'll pop out!

  4. When I first started running AM v8 in classic "simulation" mode, the create tools worked fine, but I had to reboot in OS9 to render. Same with early versions of 10.5 (if I recall properly). I now have v10.5i (I think!) and it functions much better in classic simulation, and it renders fine in "final" render quality. Still can't seem to render in wireframe, but that's minor, as rendering with one mulitpass is quick enough for test renders.

All I can say is, download the latest version if you haven't already, and try again. I confess I'm confused when I read about inconsistent performance between comparably configured macs. I guess it could come down to video cards and updated drivers for them, but I don't know enough about this stuff.

If you need to restart in OS9 to work in AM, hopefully it will just be temporary until the OSX version launches.

  5. This is a good start and I agree with above comments. But the ear, and attaching it, seems to be the 800-pound gorilla when it comes to modeling heads. It looks weird, and the ear could use either more detail or more stylizing. Sorry I can't be more specific. Try to make the ear more of a "unit" with the head.

  6. I just tried creating a blobby emitter material for the first time. I was following the instructions from the manual as well as an online tute I found somewhere. Anyway, AM just will not allow me to apply the material either to a model or to a named group. It's supposed to work like a regular material, right? Just create the material and drop it onto a model or named group in the PWS?

Is there some secret or extra step to this?

  7. Yeah Phil, this guy has a nice look to him, slightly crazed look in the eyes, and the eyebrows are just enough to give him some personality even in repose. I also like the ears, but I wonder if the top edges should narrow just a little as they join the head.

  8. In addition to all the above reasons for the forum being an improvement on the mail list, after that last email virus, the mail list was disrupted, hash's server was compromised, and I was unable to post to the list for several days. I also started getting some peculiar emails that appeared to be generated by the list but were not from list members.

The forum makes all those problems go away. And like the man said, I don't have to wade through 100 emails from people saying "good job!" etc.

Not that there's anything wrong with that!
