  1. I've had this hanging in my studio, as rough and low-res as it is, and just the other day had the brilliant brainstorm of actually checking out pbjpublishing.com to see if they had a better version. Well, lo and behold, they not only offer it as a framable poster, but they also have a high-res version to download! It's formatted a little differently and they had to remove Pixar's name, but it's way nicer than the image above.

Check it out at http://www.etsy.com/listing/109570611/post...hop_home_active or go right to their home page at http://www.pbjpublishing.com/app/hansel-and-gretel/

  2. I was under the impression that this was already being done. I thought I'd seen a video of 3D printing of houses sometime last year, but anyway...

I do agree with Simon that the presenter sort of glosses over the reasons that these slums exist in the first place. It's not construction technology that's the problem, it's political will. The idea that a new technology will solve the problems of poverty is a little too simpleminded.

But I suppose that if building these machines would line the right pockets it could be done!

  3. Mark, that's actually a pretty good idea! the only thing that stops me from doing a KS is the rewards part. That's the "extra trouble" thing I was grousing about.

EDIT: David, thanks for the link but actually my memory has always been pretty good. I've just let those muscles get lazy over the years. the trick with the Declaration is that it's just a long list, I'll need some kind of mnemonic devices to work that out.

My other pitfall to deal with is getting through the last paragraph without tearing up. It's some powerful sentiments, these guys were putting their lives on the line.

  4. This may be the furthest off-topic topic in the history of off-topic topics, but here goes...

When I was little, growing up in a family of ten, there was a running joke around the 4th of July where my dad would challenge us to memorize the Declaration of Independence. If we succeeded, he would give us a dime, which was part of the joke I *think*.

Of course we never did, we were little, and the document is big! But I would think about it over the years, and in my twenties I did memorize the first two paragraphs, but I never got further than that.

I think of it every year, of course right around the 4th, but by then it's too late for that year, and who wants to start a year-long project when you're already of the mindset that it's too late?

Well this year is perhaps the first year when I thought of it in good time. So I'm going to spend the next 2+ months committing this document to memory, and make a YouTube video of my recitation to be released maybe the week before the 4th.

I thought of doing a goofy Kickstarter, where I need to raise fifty bucks for coffee or something silly like that, but that seems like extra trouble. Maybe I just announce it on FB, put upweekly updates on YouTube, with each segment complete, then roll out the final version for the 4th.

So this is my kind-of official announcement for this project, and I'm also looking for ways to promote this as a project for its own sake, no gain to me of any kind, just something to do for my dad if for nothing else.

Any ideas? Or should I just go and do it?

  5. I got this message from someone who, though they aren't donating ('cause they're broke), and aren't going to share the link (because of the boobies on the dancing chick), had some "advice" for me:

You’ve made Tar a very flat character to your kickstarter audience. He isn’t likeable yet because you haven’t let us get to know him. People are much more likely to support someone they like, and while you're likeable, you're only the artist, not the character.

Make your audience adore TAR. Here in Facebook, post a BIO for Tar. Do not compare him to other characters or to other famous characters’ famous creators; you’ve done that already. Tell us: What makes TAR unique? How does his story, his personality, add something NEW to the animation that has come before him? How does he reveal how WE are as human beings? Let everyone get to know him a bit, beyond just that he’s a violent hippo.

But really...He IS just a violent hippo!:)

William, this is excellent advice and mirrors what I learned from TV execs and other advisors/tutors at Kidscreen back in February. Don't discount it.
