pixelplucker
Years ago I used to do per cuts, started to get back into it again but because I'm so lazy these days I decided to use my laser.
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted April 22, 2015 Hash Fellow Share Posted April 22, 2015 I had to turn my head to the left to see it. How interesting. Is that all one piece?
NancyGormezano
INTERESTING what material are you laser cutting? What are "per cuts"? and What machine are you using? I am interested in doing intricate stencils and layering them, perhaps, but was looking at something like a Silhouette Cameo paper cutter (Interesting design, but difficult to make out the dog)

Admin Rodney Posted April 23, 2015 Admin Share Posted April 23, 2015 I've yet to see a laser cut (in progress) up close and person (youtube doesn't count!) so I'm still very intrigued by the technology.
pixelplucker
Yup one pieces of paper (per is my typo). In this case I used ordinary bond paper. Typically rice paper holds up better and there are various colors, opacity and textures. I had purchased a small import 40 watt CO2 laser. Ripped out the junk table it had and replaced it with a vacuum draw down table I made. I also changed out the lense for a shorter focal length allowing for a finer spot size. Since I tend to cut small pieces and thin stock I mounted a squirrel cage blower that keeps the smoke off the surface without blowing too hard on the surface. The exhaust is directly across it. Most will use an air assist that is a cone mounted in place of the lense retaining ring but I fount that the air hose tends to drag on the lense carriage and the smoke build up make for a lot more lense and mirror cleaning. The software the laser uses is not all that great so I use Serif DrawPlus and export out a plt file that imports in flawlessly. I think the software can use CorelDraw but I don't have it to confirm. Next time I cut something I'll film it, not a whole lot to watch but pretty nifty.
NancyGormezano
Neat - thanks for showing. Looking forward to seeing your video, next time you cut. (Like I said - I might purchase a Silhouette Cameo Paper cutter ($269) that will also cut fabric. Will take illustrator files, and also comes with own software. Here's example of some amazing intricate stencils done on Silhouette Cutter)
Admin Rodney Posted April 23, 2015 Admin Share Posted April 23, 2015 Silhouette Cameo Paper I was looking at one of those (or something like it) awhile back and for the life of me I couldn't see if it would allow new custom designs to be loaded (i.e. import AI/Coreldraw files). It seemed that all the models I was looking at were limited to templates that were preloaded onto the machine... but which you could purchase more. It appeared I was looking at lower end models and I needed the higher priced machines. That was a deal breaker for me. Not that I would have bought one... but I would have wanted one. I have to be careful about such purchases or it'll be a lot like my scanner... that thing I always wanted... had to have but couldn't afford when I first started getting serious about drawing... and now have but never use. pixelplucker
That cameo cutter looks pretty net, just finished cutting out heat transfer twill for one of my customers who was making some baseball uniforms. Stunk my shop up, one of the downsides of a laser. One of the advantages of a laser is you can go more intricate since it never touches the surface but there aren't any in the price range of the silo cutter. The vacuum pump alone is probably twice the price of the silo cutter.
pixelplucker
Laser in action, sorry I can't attach the stink from some material being cut. trim.B508C1D9-D3AA-425F-B25A-ABD864A1B68B.MOV
