Before the migration to the new server, I remember the forum having a specialised branch about the SDK, but I can't find it now. Is it coming back or does this mark the end of support for the SDK?

I just tried searching on "SDK" and the search just hung there with no results. <_>
It's possible it got lost in the shuffle. Hopefully Rodney will look at it.

I'm doubtful it's been formally withdrawn.

Sorry for late response... up until moments ago I couldn't even see this forum.

It almost looks like the conversion from old to new forum ran out of memory and stopped granting permissions to some forums.

As my primary group is 'Helpdesk' that left me seeing very few forums.

I assume some this relates to why you/we cannot see the SDK forum.

I can't dig deep at the moment but I've got it on my list to get all the forums showing ASAP.

I seem to recall the SDK forum disappearing before the server move though because I was looking for it prior to the move.

At a guess I'd say it was moved to a development forum...

The v18 SDK info: http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=45844

In the interim If there is a specific question you have regarding the SDK or development you might post it in the Open Topics forum.

It may be that the only the forum title was changed. If that is the case I likely did that.

There were two areas of concern in the SDK forum, one dealt with gaming and the other with 3rd Party programs and utilities.

If that is the case the topics of the SDK forum would now be in the Game Development and 3rd Party Development forums which are both part of the A:M Exchange category.

The goal being to facilitate the growing interest in A:M development.

Note that historically a lot of direct work with the SDK was conducted off forum (Google Groups etc.).

Yves Poissant would be able to provide more info on that because as I recall he may have even helped to host/monitor it.

A lot of deep exploration occurred there which lead directly to some very cool plugins/wizards (Sweeper, etc.) and... unless I am mistaken... this is also where Steffen really got to know the inner workings of A:M thoroughly.

I understand the need to move offline for specific projects but by moving these all under the A:M Exchange topic (out into the public eye) information can be collected and shared more universally.

Information specific to the SDK can and should be collected into it's own forum but the v18 SDK is hot off the presses and as of yet hasn't been publicly explored.

I recall Martin saying that they provided the SDK "without support".

Their experience was that almost all questions they got about it were really about general programming knowledge from people who weren't truly well-versed enough in programming and the essential techniques of programming for CG to use an SDK anyway.

They couldn't devote time to teaching C++ so they decided the SDK would have to be officially "unsupported". Of course they still discussed issues as those arose from developers they had a relationship with.

I'll note that if you are one of the few who are SDK capable and find an issue with it, bugs can in the SDK can be reported like other bugs at hash.com/reports.

I highly recommend to bring it back under the name SDK or Software Developing Kit (SDK) for the simple reason that most will search for exactly that. it can be a link to the 3rd party developement area or a real forum but it should really be named like that to help people find it and to tell them: yes there is a sdk available.

I second that.

It's more of a request rather than a question: could you please update the links in those topics when they come back online? Most of the links were dead, including the tutorial on setting up the plugin development environment.

I wish I could! I have no control over links that are off site or to places on the internet that are no longer available.

One of the first things I started doing when I took over as admin was start uploading resources as attachments so that those resources wouldn't go away when someone's personal website/server was shut down, moved, etc. But here's the deal... if you can point to a missing link there is a very good chance we can find the resource, update the link. The author of the post is responsible for keeping the link updated but in the absence of the author updates can be made as those interested bring those topics to the fore. Disclaimer. I can't update *everything* so don't expect that to happen. For best results launch an email or forum message to the original author of the topic or post.

As far as the tutorial on setting up plugins... that was/is on Steffen's site. I browsed through it less than a month ago (but don't recall if it was via www.archive.org or the original). This is easy enough to check though.

If there is a resource that is in the forum it is either in the Game Development or 3rd Party Development forum.

Exception: There may be some topics that are buried in the Archives that weren't

As for the name... I added the name Software Development to the A:M Exchange category even before you posted.

Things to do:

- Open an SDK forum in the A:M Exchange category (right now it would be empty but I'm sure we can find resources for it)

- Provide a link to the current SDK within that forum (currently that link is in 'Latest Info'.

- Collect useful information related to SDK for that forum

:)

If someone can point me to what they think needs to be brought back I'll gladly look into it.

Example: The plugin development tutorial.

As I recall that was on Steffen's site and is either still there are still available via www.archive.org.

I know this because I visited the site less than a month ago.

Two caveats... it's very old information... some of it is in German.

Edit: Here's a link to those tutorials:

Done.

Now teach me how to program with C++. :)

If development blossoms it can gain it's own dedicated category.

I was going to post a link inside the SDK forum to the location where the v18 SDK is but... the Hash FTP site doesn't seem to be online at the moment.

Perhaps Jason is updating the server...

Just took the time to translate his "Debugging eines Plugins" / Debugging of a plugin tutorial to English.

Hope it is of any help. I think it is quite old and I am not sure, if it still needs this tutorial for that (it has to do with the copy protection used way back, but it still may be the case and a small workaround for debugging an A:M plugin is still needed... but I do not know)...

All the other tutorials there are already available in English...

(Erstellung eines Plugins fuer A:M V9 und höher = Create a plugin for A:M V9 and higher)

See you

Will be back when Jason is back in... there is a problem with the FTP-software of the new server, which somehow (no good reason) crashes from time to time. Maybe he will install another FTP software to solve that... we will see.

See you
