Would talking about the use of certain aspects of a 'rival' piece of software in the A:M forum be frowned upon? I only want to talk about the compositing and video editing parts of Blender. (I still much prefer A:M for modelling and animating)

I don't have Premier or AE and the Blender VE component is free and does the job. I only mention the Compositing part since I have never been able to get my head around A:M's compositing features.

Cheers

I think it's been mentioned before but i don't think we've gone into great detail here about any editing or compositing programs because that's a whole concern beyond 3D animation and all those programs have their own support venues with knowledgeable people (I hope).

But if you have some sort of problem that is A:M specific like an import/export thing... ask away! Worst case, we will have no clue.

(that is not an official forum statement, just my sense of it)

David,

A wise person can post about just about anything here in the forum.

The problem with some product related discussions is that inevitably (99.98% of the time) they degenerate into opinionated product comparisons and more often than not end in personal attacks and bruised egos. These discussions have no place in the A:M community. For such fringe areas of interest, people are welcome to start their own online community. This forum is supplied by Hash Inc to support users of A:M.

Note: The degeneration of topics is often not the fault of the topic originator who most likely just wanted to scratch an itch or answer a curiosity but a sabotaged topic often cannot be repaired nor will hurt feelings quickly mend. Where possible an attempt to remove the offending post is made rather than close down the entire thread but the offender isn't likely to appreciate the effort made.

the use of certain aspects of a 'rival' piece of software

Your wording here provides us a clue as to how to proceed.

If we focus on those areas that are compatible and demonstrate optimum use of A:M then excellent discussions can proceed.

An excellent way not to proceed would be: "I have this program that does this... now why in the holy heck can't A:M do that!"

I'd like to think we are way past all of that. A good internal gauge would be that if we ever feel the urge to type, "I know this post will be deleted but..." then we probably should reconsider, rephrase and/or save the idea for another day.

be warned pretty sure its not legal

Discussing/promoting things that are not legal or legally questionable also moves a topic into dangerous territory.

Such flags will always catch the eye of an attentive moderator.

That may be more info than you requested but hopefully that at least answers your question. :)

i saw the original topic was deleted

I doubt the original topic was deleted. Not impossible but rather unlikely.

Perhaps it was just moved to another location or merged with another similar topic.

Did someone get one running?

Sure did. I got two to run and posted about it in that topic... Photoshop and Acrobat.

I thought I could get more to run but it looked like it was going to take more R&D than I thought necessary.

All of the installers were jacked up in one way or another... some more than others.

That can happen with old software installations on new systems.
