Hi Steve, I believe that was my comment, and here's the link: http://www.the-ottoman.com/blog/

Well worth looking at, beautiful work with Luckbat, who studied directing at CalArts, running the show. but it appears to have foundered, unless they're continuing to create but not posting on the blog. I do hope it's the latter, because he put aside his vampire epic to quickly bat out this short and I think it's taken on a life of its own.

The Ottoman Project has a facebook group, which seems to have been recently updated. The artwork, concepts all look incredibly gorgeous, luscious. But considering that this project has been going on since 2008?, I'd say 4 years for an 8 minute film is cruising into perfectionist-crazy land.

It will be outstanding, exemplary, if they ever finish, no doubt.

But I have to wonder: "what are their expectations for success and what is their definition of success?"

If you recall Mike's exacting work over the most minute of details on Ebon it shouldn't surprise anyone to see a similar approach from Mike here. If fact, I may have refined my understanding of the word 'exacting' from watching his approach to a shot here. I recall being glad he had the patience for it because for me there is absolutely no way I would sweat that level of detail. With Mike there is no doubt he will get to his goal but if I did that same thing it would be a guarantee the project would never get made. After working with Mike temporarily to help translate Aoki(Shaoe Guee.com)Tact's futuristic mini-classic into english (for which Mike did the vast majority of translation), I better appreciated the difference in approaches and realize the importance in sweating the details. In fact, it's helped to formulate a philosophy, "Sweat the details. The big stuff will take care of itself."

There is also the social and professional aspect to consider and producing 'Ottoman' at any rate (slow or fast) fulfills an important aspect of that. To an extent, a slower production will work better in this regard than fast. This is not a race to the finish line he is having. Mike knows his standard and is laser focused on that.

If you haven't read the 'Ottoman' script, it is well worth reading and/or analyzing.

It's good to recognize that 'Ottoman' is being created in the off time of people that actually work in the animation or related field (illustration for instance). Even with seasoned folks involved it takes time and effort to realize such projects. There is no secret sauce to the process and anyone with a like mind and a scratch worth itching can begin to produce a short film. Getting a project in the can and presented to an audience on the other hand goes beyond mere ingredients.
