johnl3d Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Has anyone ever changed the operating system from windows 7 32 bit to windows 7 64 bit my copy of windows 7 has both versions on cd currently my machine has the 32bit version and thinking of changing to 64 bit. My computer has an AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core processor 5200+ 2.7 GHz with 4 GB of ram. Any problems or suggestions welcome it seems like it should work with custom install will have a backup but... Fuchur Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Is there a special reason why you need 64bit? For older computers you should first check that every driver for your hardware is available in 64bit-versions. I am not sure what you mean by the custom install, but I highly recommend to format your harddrive and install on a fresh system then. (it is never a mistake to backup your current one of course) 64bit will enable you to use all of the 4 GB, but this will not give you a massive performance boost. (I tend to built systems with 16 GB nowadays). However it is not a mistake to go to 64bits just because todays software is often running better on 64bit version (simply because it is more common today than 32bit if both versions are available and of course it can access more RAM), See you *Fuchur* Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted December 17, 2014 Hash Fellow Posted December 17, 2014 If you have a way to image your entire 32-bit system now, and the 64-bit doesn't work out, then it will be easy to go back to your current set-up. Quote
