Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted November 28, 2012 Hash Fellow Posted November 28, 2012 A quick experiment for a tutorial i'm working on about "Texturing". A simple mesh made to look like an old fashioned barrel with just materials, no bitmap decals... How did these things not leak? I would think the quickest way to not have any rum would be to put it in a barrel made of wooden boards. Quote
John Bigboote Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Great demonstration of 'minimal-splinesmanship' from one of the best! I'd love to see how Newton Dynamics handles these things when you are thru... Quote
Kamikaze Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Those do look sweet......I've made barrels before but not as low patch and not as good looking....... Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted November 28, 2012 Author Hash Fellow Posted November 28, 2012 Fun Fact: Barrels often have a convex shape, bulging at the middle. This constant bulge makes it easier to roll a well-built wooden barrel on its side, changing directions with little friction. - from the always reliable Wikipedia (although that particular part was flagged for "citation needed") Quote
John Bigboote Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 How did these things not leak? Something about the wood swells-up once it gets permeated with liquid... so they must have filled the barrell with water and let it swell, then dump the water and add the booze. We used to have one for a rain water holder... worked well! Quote

I would think the quickest way to not have any rum would be to put it in a barrel made of wooden boards. The wood use (oak usually) was seasoned and with fine craftsmanship at the joints and when bands where applied to tighten the joints then filled with water to expand the wood and make a nice tight seal ... I have seen it done once and there may be other ways of doing it but no glue! Quote
