Tom Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Hello All- Don't know how many saw the Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part I, but just saw it and couldn't believe the exquisite 3 minute clip of animation inserted to tell a story in the middle of the film. Directed by a Swiss animator... WOW... just breathtaking use of the technology. Hope you enjoy! Tom Quote
John Bigboote Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 wowwww. nice storytelling, beautiful imagery... spellbinding. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 1, 2011 Hash Fellow Posted August 1, 2011 Cool! If you love shadow animation check out "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" an animated feature made in Germany in 1926! Quote
Tom Posted August 2, 2011 Author Posted August 2, 2011 The Prince Achmed animation is also cool... The Harry Potter animators referenced that work (I think)... Tom Quote
Tom Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 It is really cool that the characters are dark yet they are throwing shadows up on the gauzy background like it is a hanging curtain. For them to throw shadows there must be a light at their feet and yet they are dark.... so I'm figuring that the characters are set to dark with a high ambiance so they won't accept light. I wonder if there is a better way to achieve that effect....? Tom Quote

Just setting them to black ought to be enough. It would be in A:M! Now that I look at it again I think those are fully 3D characters rather than flat puppets, but carefully posed none-the-less. Quote
Tom Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 Yes,... those definitely seem to be 3D models carefully choreographed to emulate a shadow show. I love the fact that we can move into the shadow show and break the plane while rotating around the characters, but it still has a shadow show "feel" to it. It seems like they are also using fog very well, to create a "gauzy" background effect. Great piece of work...and very inspiring. Tom Quote
itsjustme Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 If you haven't seen it, "The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello" is very good as well. Quote
Tom Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 Thanks for sharing! That looks very cool also... Tom Quote
