I was wondering if there is a way I can recreate the ash effect like when a vampire dies in the Blade movies. I'm making a vampire movie and want to utilize this effect. I'll probably do it half real ash and half CGI but I'm not sure how to do make a person ash like they do in the movies. Can anyone help me out?

This one could help:

Blade - Trinity

Have a look at 1:04...

I think a Material-Effector in combination with a nice Particle-Emitter (Sprite) and the "Eugene"-Model ( a skull-model on the A:M-CD) could help.

A tutorial for the material-effector can be found here. It is old, but should still work more or less like that: Material Effector Tutorial by Jeff Paries

That is one highly advanced effect. You would need to combine practical (live shot) and 3D particles in a compositing program like Adobe After Effects...

Haven't tried this but sounds like it would work correctly.

You would have to do a fade composite for this trick to work but:

Model the character.

Make the model transparent & flip the normals to face the inside.

Assign particles to surface with full gravity so they fall down.

Render animation.

Composite the live & CG.

Just a thought.

First post after another long hiatus.

I'm trying to achieve something along these lines, which is more akin to the

(ignore the music) from War of the Worlds, but I believe that the two effects are similar in preparation, if not in final look.

If I make any progress I'll add something to the thread
