  1. Basically, anime is Japanese animation. Also, the word anime is a transliteration of the English word animation. Manga are comics that are published in Japan. In Japan comics are far more respected, as are their creators, than comics in the US, sad to say. I may be wrong, if I am, someone please correct me. I do believe it is pronounced an-a-may.

A nice site for news and tidbits:

    Hope this helps.

  2. When you begin a model you have to specifically name a path and a group. Once you do that you can go into the wizard and using the pull down menu, specify the two. Hope this helps.

  3. Well, I can attest to the fact that this demo is far better live! Greg has a keen ability to engage passer bys and the Hash crowds are consistently larger than other booths...always brings a very large smile to my face. Greg brings them in than Steve swoops in for the kill! Oops...I mean the sale!! They make a potent one two combo.

    Sorry Steve... :D

  4. I hadn't seen any new film from Pixar that featured a turtle. Where can I see this? The turtle, if I remember correctly, was either from the Hash CD, or from a free site generated by a generous AM'er! :)

As far as clutter, specific to under the bed, when I get a bit more time on my hands, I plan to finish some models that I hope to populate the room. I'm looking at my daughter's room and trying to decide which objects to use in a clever manner.

The great thing with working with Yves is that he really pushes the artist, that being me, to do the best that I can!!!! :D Believe me, the room is far better than I could have hoped for. There are several things that I hope to add to the room...I only wish I had more time.

There are still many things that I hope to do in prepping for my animation, but Yves and the photon mapping technique have helped me lay the stage for this. I encourage all AM'ers to really try, and push, photon mapping. This way we can really make A:M shine and allow photon mapping to be better developed for future releases.

  5. Let me throw my $.02 since the room is somewhat, loosely, based on my daughter’s room. By the way…it’s never that tidy!! Yes, that is the size of the bed that my wife and I bought her...fine Italian wood! :D I modeled the bed, and the rest of the furniture, to scale. My daughter likes to be "free" while she sleeps. Also, while my daughter takes dance and plays with Barbies...she also plays a wicked game of tennis, baseball, soccer and loves Harry Potter on the X-Box. She has a fondness for anime due to me!! ;) There is much tension, in a fun and loving way, between adult and child because, let's face it, kids are tough nut to crack! Especially a five year old. My daughter drives us batty because of that reason. My wife can’t believe that she sat through Star Wars with me…go figure. The room, and the chrome robot, are for an animation that I am working on. I am currently modeling the girl, several other characters as well as adding more specific models to make the room a wee bit more…girly.

When Yves and I spoke about photon mapping, we decided to use the "room" as jumping point - since I had most of it modeled anyway. For me, it was a no brainer...I jumped at the opportunity to work with him. Yves, besides being an incredible artist, is incredibly knowledgeable and a complete professional as well as being completely supportive and enthusiastic. I have learned quite a bit from him... :)

Yves really turned the room around, greatly improving it, from the original scene that we begun with. He really made the room click and added much mood and detail to it.

I hope I shed some more light on the subject. If not, please ask away…

  6. Very simple. Click on the Chor icon in the pws. Make sure that you have the properties panel open. If not, right click on the chor icon and open the properties panel. You will see an option for Radiosity. Turn this option on. This will activate the many options for photon mapping. This is where the fun really starts!! :D You will be amazed at what this will do to your renders as far as quality is concerned. Also, be warned. Photon mapping will drastically increase your renders!! For me, the final image is well worth it...

  7. What I have always admired, and respected, about Jim's modeling, is his usage of splines. His models are all well crafted and none are overly heavy with regards to their mesh. No easy feat. I, as well as others, would not mind a tutorial... :D

    Nah...no pressure. ;)

  8. If you look back in literary works, starting with the Bible, Christ was crucified at 33, which in turn, inspired Dante to write his 33 Cantos. From there, Shakespeare incorporated the "three" theme with the three witches etc.... Also, in a bizarre twist, when a "movie" star passes away, do you notice that they all die in "threes"...hmmm.

  9. At first I thought it was Michael...kidding! :D Right off the bat, I thought it was Janet, post "Facts of Life"...that was a loooong time ago. The one thing I would suggest is try to make her face (nose and lip area) rounder, it's very angular and sharp. I do like the model. You did capture a likeness to her. Nice job.

  10. I am working on a scene, nearly done, utilizing photon mapping. It's an interior shot of a room. The render times are rather long. However, in my opinion, well worth it. I think photon mapping is an absolutely amazing addition to A:M's arsenal of tools. Now having it, I cannot imagine not using it. I agree with Yves, with the proper settings, photon mapping can be used in quite possibly any scene. The end results will easily validate the reasoning behind using the technique in the first place. I am also interested, and quite like, Skycast and I think it can be used quite effectively - with regards to render speed, as Yves noted. I have only used the Skycast demo for a short time. What I noticed is that the time to render a scene, and setting it up, is faster. What I like is having options. As noted, how a scene is being lit, whether or not indirect lighting is required, should dictate which method should be used. For me, I am glad for both solutions and plan to use photon mapping as well as Skycast... :D

  11. I agree, Skycast is looking amazingly well. I only had a chance to test it once, and I really liked it. I can't wait for the final release...hint! :D

Also, any animations done with Skycast?

  12. I was getting worried there for a minute...glad you are updating your models! :D After seeing your last post, your model reminds me, facial expressions, of Buzz Lightyear, one of my all time favorite characters! Keep it up. I really enjoy your facial expressions on the model.

    PS:

    Dont forget Skycast!!!!! :)
