jakerupert
Just started to browse a bit at deviantart.com. Ist a really vast and hard to follow up Website and community. So maybe you guys here have some more insights and could answer me some questions. Firstly what astounds me is, if you click "allow adult content" , I am able to see all Kind of kinky stuff without any verification. How is this confirming with US law? Or is Porn just starting , when you show actual "p....tration"? Second theres presented all kind of comissoned work. So the artists seem to get payed for their sometimes quite amateurish work. Is it, that people contact artists they like at deviantart, to draw some pictures and stories for them and pay them or have the artists sold there work beforehand at some other place. Are artists actually may be making a living just by way of deviantart?
Gerry
It's funny that you mention deviantart this morning, Jost, I just spent some time (first time ever) clicking through their main page art out of curiosity as well as inspiration. I can't tell you anything about the "adult" stuff, not familiar with what they have in that category. However I doubt anyone is making money over there, maybe some commissions here and there, maybe trades or barter or "exposure". If anyone is making money with this approach, they are likely people who already have an art or illustration career. But in general, the internet is forcing all prices for art down! However that's just my impression, so take it with a grain of salt.
Darkwing
I've always seen it as like the Youtube model. There's probably a few people making a living and some people making a few things here and there, but on the whole I don't expect it's something to quit your day job over.
