*A:M User* Roger Posted September 22, 2012 *A:M User* Share Posted September 22, 2012 Just got back from seeing Judge Dredd. I have to say, I expected it to be violent but it was pretty over-the-top. Not something I would take a kid to see. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. I went in with really low expectations, but this was actually a pretty decent reboot of the franchise. Not sure what I was expecting, but this film was much grittier than the Stallone film from the 90s. The plot starts of with an investigation of a triple homicide which evolves into taking down a drug ring. The action sequences were tight and the film moved along pretty well. If you're choosing between this and Resident Evil, go see Judge Dredd. (unless you really like Milla Jovovich)
Admin Rodney Posted September 22, 2012 Admin Share Posted September 22, 2012 It doesn't surprise me that the movie is violent. The comic book was extremely so. Not sure I'll go see it in the theaters but I'll probably watch it sometime in the future. I've never been a big fan of the Dredds although I really enjoyed Brian Bolland's artwork. *A:M User* Roger Posted September 23, 2012 Author *A:M User* Share Posted September 23, 2012 I expected it would be violent. I was just surprised where they pulled punches *spoilers follow * * * * * * * * There is a scene where one of the drug dealers picks up the female judge's sidearm. The guns are keyed to their palmprints and designed to explode if drawn by an unauthorized user. So the drug dealer picks the gun up, it blows off his hand (which they don't show). Given that the movie had an R rating and up to that point they didn't shy from showing gore (guys head gets lit up with an incendiary round, bullets ripping through cheeks and bones and teeth flying everywhere) I was really surprised they didn't show the guys hand get taken off. I figure they must have been skirting an NC-17 rating and that was the thing that would have put it over the top. At least, that's what I assume. Admin Rodney Posted September 23, 2012 Admin Share Posted September 23, 2012 Maybe they had maxed out on their FX budget. I expect it was Judge Dredd that might have inspired the guns from a story I was working on in my teens/early twenties. In the story the earth's military recruited a race of aliens as soldiers because they all had one thing in common... they were left handed. The military then designed weapons that were not only biologically cued to the individual but that little precaution alone was to be responsible for winning many wars because the majority of earthlings are right handed. The trick that the military played on everyone turned out to be that there really wasn't a biological connection to triggering the gun... they couldn't figure out a way to perfect that technlogy. So they simply told everyone it was there and everyone... even the lefthanded alien soldiers believed it. Once they put their hand into the gun handle they simply had to turn on a power switch by punching a personal code in on the exterior. I'm guessing that Judge Dredd's guns had an influence on that idea. That and the bullets that shot around corners. Who wouldn't think that was neat. The guns were an interesting concept. I found myself wondering why it took so long for him to run out of ammo, though.

*A:M User* Roger Posted September 26, 2012 Author *A:M User* Share Posted September 26, 2012 I think you fell through the same wormhole I did. It's 1995 and I'm a sophomore in college with a full head of hair again.
