Here is an attempt at getting an image with a cool morning light feel. The background is just a

decal with cool light color applied and some fog effects. The foreground is modeled with a lot of small individual

lights to give the impression of bounced lighting off the floor and walls, etc.

Does it work? Any suggestions for improvement?

It will be greatly improved by ambient occlusion. That will darken the corners and the spots where the beams hit the floor and ground everything better.

I would definetly use ambient occlusion for the indirect ambient lighting, and a couple rims or a sun for some slightly defined shadows. I like the texture s you have going to, but a bump map on those would give it that little push on details. Overall its a great scene.

Pixar made a lot of movies without any ambient occlusion, but they didn't do many shots like this either.

Yeah, i think AO would help very much in a diffuse lighting situation like this.

On the other hand, "morning" would have very strong, long shadows; this seems more of a midday shot.
