It's probably not necessary to model the full armor. Samurai really only wore their armor when going to war, or for ceremonial processions. Depending on the period in Japan's history. Also, a ninja is going to try to take his prey completely by suprise, attacking when most vulnerable, probably the middle of the night.

 

I recommend checking out some samurai movies, the Zatoichi series is good, and anything by Kurosawa is worth seeing.

The mini-series Shogun is very good for costume, culture and setting reference, but it is rife with historical inaccuracies.

It looks like you have a lot of creasing where you don't want it. Can you post a wireframe shot?

Here is an update with the wireframe. I fixed the creases around the nose and mouth a little bit.

I added the mouth, teeth, hair and eyes. I also started the upper body.

I finished modeling my samurai but I still need to texture it.

The rest of the body is looking so smooth, that you might want to revisit his face later.

The bits under his feet are supposed to be sandals. I might put the strap there or take them out all together.

I was learning how to make materials and I added cloth and armor textures to my samurai. The cloth is just a projection map bump, and the armor is just a checker mat.
