Ok go into top view and use the lath tool to create a circle it will usualy have 8 points , now what i want to be able to do is to is to grab one of the points like say the bottom one and snap it to a grid point with the others following the same path so it remains a circle and not some blob thing.

I still don't understand. Maybe a drawing? Or some idea of what shape you are trying to end up with? If you snap the control points to a grid, it won't be a circle any more.

How about if you select several points and drag them all at the same time? Or Extrude?

I think I understand what you want but rather than using snap to grid you should just drag and rotate the whole lathed mesh so that one cp is on the point in the grid you want. It won't be exact but it should be close enough. Snapping to grid doesn't have any "options"... you either "snap" or you don't.
