Stronghorn Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 I am thinking of purchasing a new laptop with vista os. Does anyone know if Am runs on vista or should I stick with XP. Also if anyone has vista how do you like the overall performance of new operating system? Thanks for any advice. Quote
pdaley Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Stick with XP if you need to be super functional right now. I just bought a laptop with Vista and I was disappointed to discover that little things like graphics drivers from Nvidia are somehow a year old with no indication of new ones coming out -ever-. The card is a GeForce Go 7900 GS. That's a prety high end card for a laptop. I can't help wondering how much better the darn thing would work (because it's already pretty good) if it had some recent drivers. Quote
KenH Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Was it a second hand laptop? I assume a new one would come with up to date ones....then again, laptops seem to take second precedence to desktops with graphic card companies. I would assume this is the only issue with running AM on Vista. As long as you check if there are up to date Vista drivers for the card you're getting then it should be ok. Quote
jon Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 short answer: vista works, but xp is better for now. notebook video drivers are updated by the machine's company, not the video cards. this can be trouble, but not all vendors wait a year for driver updates. i can't recommend hp, since their customer service is total, complete, comedic crap, but they do update the nvida video driver for my vista-ridden tx every few months or so. -jon Quote
pdaley Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 That's what I'm saying Ken. I've looked on the internet and I've seen severl forums with other owners of my same model (Dell E1705) saying the exact same thing. Dell doesn't have anything besides a 'compatibility' driver that's a year old. There -are- ways around that, but then you're dealing with unofficial, almost hacker level stuff. Quote

It seems I still hear too many negatives about vista, I will wait for bugs to get worked out. Quote
KallistaAEnvarou Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I'm not sure how much of a choice you will get. Most personal computers and laptops available for purchase right now will automatically come with Vista. Quote

leander Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 There are many Vista versions: Basic, Premium, Enterprise, Business and Ultimate. Whats is the minium package that runs A:M? 32 or 64 bit versions? Sorry my english. Quote
KenH Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Go for Premium at least. My guess is you should also go for 32 bit as there aren't very many 64 bit drivers yet. I don't know if AM would run on it though. Quote
jon Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Whats is the minium package that runs A:M? 32 or 64 bit versions? they will all run a:m. i can't think of any direct impact changing flavors of vista will have on running a:m. for other uses, check this microsoft chart for the differences. it's mostly about networking and media handing. i run vista premium x64, and have had only a little trouble finding the right drivers. most programs however, -- including a:m -- are 32 bit native, so there's no real need for x64 unless you desperately need 4 or more gigs of ram. -jon update: this page says windows x64 is about 10% faster than the 32 bit version. again, prolly not worth worrying about. So....if the program is 32 bit native (like AM) then it won't run on the 64 bit version of AM? Can a 32 bit OS be emulated by 64 bit OSes? I'd really like to go for 64 bit and be future proof for now. And of course, for all this to work, I assume the processor needs to be 64 bit too. Quote
Fuchur Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 As far as I know, every 32 bit-programm will run on a 64-bit system... just not the other way round... *Fuchur* Quote
jon Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 yep, 32 bit programs -- including a:m -- run fine on vista x64. when they have an x64 a:m, it won't run on a 32 bit os. -jon Quote

kuep Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 I have a question about vista. I tried AM on a system with and everything seemed to work fine except when I went to orbit in the perspective window. It seemed to drag real bad. Has anyone had this happen? I am looking at buying a quad system with vista but I need it to rock and roll. no dragging, must work fast. LOL I could also install xp if I had to but hopefully i might not have to. I seen that no one really had any bad issues in the posts so maybe its just a simple thing. tx Quote
