can someone tell me which contstraint keeps a bone from moving at all? thx

To keep a bone from moving use a "translate limit" and set all of the "X", "Y" and "Z" to "0". The rotation can be limited with an "euler limit".

Hope that helps.

sorry, i should have been more specific, when i would move its children, it would move along with them, kinda like a snake body

I'm not understanding...sorry about that. Do you mean a "kinematic" constraint like in an IK leg or arm setup?

If you present the complete problem, you'll probably get a better answer...at least you should.

I believe if you turn "attached to Parent" OFF in the properties for the bone, it will no longer drag its parent when you move it.
