Feline Witch Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Is there any software that I can create music for my games with? I am using Anvil studios, but the instruments it comes with are very limited. I can create nice "temple" tracks, since I like mixing tinkling music boxes with Choir. This makes a well, the right sound for trawling crumbling temples and ancient ruins. But apart from that....nah. What I want to make is a battle music, but the drums just seem more like popping then drumbeats, the electric gutairs and basses just sound like a kid's plastic instrument. Help? Quote
OutsaneAl Posted April 27, 2005 Posted April 27, 2005 If you can afford it and put a little time into learning it, I highly recomend www.propellerheads.se/ Reason. It's what I use and it's brilliant! But, if you're on a budget I can't think of any quality free music apps. You could try Acid Xpress maybe? But, then you'd have to create or buy some sound loops. There's also the "MTV Music Generator" series. That's what got me started into music creation. It's an excelent and easy to use program that can produce some very nice tracks. You might want to look into "Tracker" music programs. I have no idea how they are worked, but they have free ones avalible and I've heard some quality tunes made with them. Quote
heyvern Posted April 27, 2005 Posted April 27, 2005 Here's is the problem I think... Correct me if I am wrong but I think Anvil studios is a midi application... the music will only be as good as the sampled instruments that are "played" by the midi file... like a player piano that is out of tune... compared to a player Wurlitzer grand piano. For instance you can download tons of really beautiful midi music... I have a fairly high end "prosumer" midi keyboard so the music sounds great. Sounds even better played through Reason... but when I play the midi files through the standard default computer midi instruments... it sounds like a tinny kids kazoo orchestra. From what little I know about games and music... there are two ways to go... Midi files (saves size on the game, less control over quality) Audio files (larger size... and you still have to create the music) I think there are ways to put in high quality instrument samples that are used programatically by the games midi music files. This is the best of both worlds since you can use high quality sampled instruments that are specific to the music but still have small size compared to having the music as a straight audio file. I don't have much info on doing this in games, but this might give you a direction to search for on the web. Vernon "!" Zehr Quote
itsjustme Posted April 27, 2005 Posted April 27, 2005 How about Skale Tracker (free)? That's what I use to put music together...it's like a sampling keyboard/workstation on the PC. I use it a lot. You can make your own instruments from samples or you can use VST plugins. If you're more into realtime synthesis, you could try Psycle (free). Quote
