  1. Will there ever be a possibility to include A:M in my normal workflow by proper import of external poly models?

Does the porcelain fix the problems with imported poly models?

    (Ok its two questions lol)

I ask these questions because speed is a factor in the kind of stuff I want to do and from my tests of patch modelling (granted in 3rd party apps) I have to think too much about how and where rather than just getting on with producing the art.

    Sorry

  2. hmmm. I dont have A:M yet in my grubby little hands and am practising with similar techniques used in free software till Friday (When I order the CD). I would much prefer to be actually using A:M now. lol. Most of the info I am gathering is where my questions come from.

    Cheers

  3. Hmm. So is the 2004 Cd not ready yet?. I ask because I notice that v 11 is only beta. I thought it was 2004. Or is it something else I dont understand. he he. I was told that it would be better to buy the CD from here as I would get v 11 2004 cd.

Hmmm. Got to get my head around this as well. lol.

SO how does updates work etc? DO I get all updates for a year then pay for upgrade at the end of a year or what?

    Cheers

  4. Still looking around the net for tutrials etc and came upon this image.

    HAnd and Foot

ARe these images using the hooks I keep reading about. I am talking about where there are four lines or so along an edge that dont continue into the next patch. That is simialr to what I tried to do in 3rd party freeware modellers but allit did was open up holes in the model unless the line was continued all around the model.

It gives me a bit more hope that I may be able to do modles in A:M. lol (Still not too sure lol)

Just gathering info for when it arrives.

    Cheers

  5. I am looking to get either Skylight 2 or Skycast. Does anyone have experience of these. WHich one is better or dot hey work differently. The skycast one looks better to me?

  6. Ok This is what I seem to have gathered so far while reading tutorials and playing with the free spline modellers that are similar.

In the unnamed software I draw some cp's then lathe them. I can move them around to get a basic shape etc of a head. From what I can gather in the tutorials for it and A:M is that there does not seem to be a way to then add detail to certain areas of the model you have lathed. e.g. I can then add detail for an eye by adding extra CP's to an area without it affecting the surrounding patches unless you add extra points all around the model. (No easy way in the 3rd party software perhaps easier in A:M? I will wait and see lol)

SO is it really so that you have to basically make a model like a join the dots puzzle one point at a time. No shortcuts like lathe a basic shape then add detail to it?

Just gathering the info before hand. Now That I know I am going for A:M I am gathering this info together until it arrives and practising as much as I can in 3rd party software. (Should help as its similar to A:M modelling from what I have read and the quicker I can get up to speed when it arrives the quicker I can get down to some stuff)

    Cheers

  7. Bakerod,

The first link you mention is what I am talking about. The second one is ummm nothing to do with it lol. Its the ability to have fine control over the final image without having to rerender the entire thing. e.g. perhaps the specularity is wrong so instead of re rendering the entire thing you just re render the specular part. Quick and lots of control.

    Cheers

  8. Yup. One thing I have noticed here is the speed and ammount of replies you get to most questions. That is a refreshing change. Does not seem to be the elitism that is apparent elsewhere. e.g. Your a newbie so dont ask me anything. Stick to you own kind type of forums elsewhere. lol. That is certainly one reason that I made the choice to go the A:M path even though it might take me a bit of getting used to lol.

Good to know that they are fast at fullfilling orders as well.

I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to reply to my sometimes bizzare and sometimes downright stupid questions and dilly dallying over what to do with my choice of investment.

So cheers folks. I look forward to posting stuff up asap.

  9. Pretty much the question I sent to support (I assume they never answered because I havent bought it yet lol) a few days ago. ( I sent it to that email address as I didnt want to do the comparison thing. Is there another email address I should put my question sto till I actually own A:M?)

    This is what I asked.

Is this the same as multi pass rendering in Cinema 4D where you can render the shadows lights etc to separate files for compositing in 3rd party applications like photoshop? (I now know this is not the same )

If not is there a way to do this. e.g. can you render just the effect of lights then shadow etc separately. (So is there?)

Just building my knowledge of A:M

    Thank you

    Mike R

  10. Yup. Already made up my mind fully now. lol. In fact All I am doing is trying to work out which tutorials/tips etc I come across are no longer needed for V 11. e.g flattening the model for decalling. I downloaded a video on how to do it and then I read somewhere else that you don't need to now. lol. Got to sort the wheat from the chaff some how.

I already have three ideas for short animations that I cant wait to try out. one only requires a single model and the other two are more involved. you'll see soon enough... I hope. lol.

    Cheers

  11. I agree. One thing i found with A:M is that a couple of years ago I heard about it and assumed that it was 2D animation. I also found more recently that although plenty folks have heard of it there seems to be a 'blank' expression' on their faces when its mentioned. lol. A common comment was I have heard its very good but I don't know much about it. I think that is something that needs to be looked at.

Let me give you my example. Recently I decided I was going to buy some more 3D software. One that would be suitable to animation and have pretty good features. Even a dedicated piece of software to just output for my current main rendering software of choice would have been fine. In a previous post I mentioned the software I was looking at including some that I just thought would be fun.

Doing a search of the net I came upon A:M again and decided to look a bit closer.

As I have said before the features have me gobsmacked (Shocked and surprised for those who don't understand gobsmacked lola).

If its as good as it seems then you will have a user for life.

So having said that how do we get it not just known about (Its pretty well known) but understood what it actually does/can do for folks.

I read plenty of times how someone bought the big named pieces of software and all they are doing is Game models and GFX. Can A:M export its animation stuff for games. Well from what I have read it seems it can and has been used. SO perhaps users here can start posting on the forums etc to do with gaming.

I don't know. I am formulating some ideas of my own at the moment but there really needs to be a big push for this application to show what it is capable of.

    Cheers

  12. As I have been looking around at A:M created models one this that struck me is how 'clean' they look.

Is this one of the good results in working with splines and patches rather than poly's?

    Cant wait to get it.

    Cheers

    Mike R

  13. Yes at the moment you are correct saying they are segmented. lol. Thats changing. Anyway. I did a quick test in one of the free apps from an image and it clarified a lot for me.

Its going to be a slog learning modelling as well as Animation lol. But it should be worth it.

Bet youll all be glad when I finally order it eh? lol. Should be by the end of the week if not early next week.

Expect lots of tales of woe as well as stills initially before I head down the animation side of it.

    Cheers

  14. I think its fear of the unknown lol. One way I suppose I could do it is make my model (its fast anyway) in my other software and use it to rotoscope or whatever in A:M. Thats probably the best idea.

Currently in the tries I have had with the free stuff I have just tried modelling from my head and thats maybe the problem. Until I grasp the concept of what is happening then move onto my models in my head. lol.

Just me being paranoid about spending cash as usual. Thats what you get for being Scottish. lol.

    Cheers

  15. Animation Master looks like a dream come true in many ways for me with regard to animation and toon rendering etc. Fantastic tools. However (and this is from someone who just doesn't get on with most modellers anyway and in no way is a slight to A:M modelling), I think I need some assurance that Animation master is easier than the free patch and spline based software for modelling. Its not the modelling thats the problem but instead its my lack of being able to grasp it I think. As I imply I don't know how much different A:mas modelling is to those so cant really make a judgement.

I have spent a frustrated evening trying to model something anything in all of them and have just given up with nothing to show.

I dent really want to have to learn a new way of modelling but will if I have to for the animation, toon rendering, hair etc that A:hm has.

Please tell me its easier than this to model. I am having doubts as the tutorials are pretty similar for all these types of modellers although A:M does seem to have some advanced features these others don't.

If I cant produce models for it and cant import ready made models into it then its back to the drawing board. (Any chance of a different version with only the animation and rendering stuff for other modellers? lol)

Anyway thanks in advance for your replies.

  16. rofl.

After last nights research I have in reality made up my mind. (I have used the freeware WIngs modeller and it has A:M mdl export and from what I have read it works pretty well so at least it will give me something of my own work to play with within A:M until I get my head around a new way of modelling.

$300 or $3000 doesn't matter really. If you don't use the application for one reason or another then its a waste of money. lol.

Also with regard to the only other 3d forum I frequent all the time I am one of two moderators so I ensure that questions are replied to.

I have played with similar modelling software now and its seems pretty straight forward although all of them had one issue I could not understand and that was if I tried to add a point along a spline then it opened a hole in the model. I am assuming this is the same and that could be the hardest part of modelling in A:M to me. Working out how to add extra points without opening holes. I will see when It comes.

    So now the magic question!

Is there any benefit to buying A:M from here at $299 or from a third party supplier who supplies it with an extra training CD for $279? (The training CD was to do with bones etc)(It may have been $289 I need to look lol.

Cheers for all the help so far.
