Wow, top-notch work!

nice work

Nice thing about working in 3D is you can cheat like heck You dont need to model braided hair the same way it is in real life, it only needs to look like it. All it is is a bunch of interlocked spheres, but when rendered it looks nice. Once you're done just add the pointed end and you're done.

Full Metal Alchemist is a great series You've got way too much geometry in the back of the skull, cut that way down or you're gonna have a heck of a time rounding that out. The only way to keep it from looking so square is to just get in there and start pulling points. Or Delete the back of the skull and attach part of a sphere, like http://demented3d.com/tutorial/toontutoria...ing/head-b.html Also, in the sideview you've got the skull coming all the way up to the top of the hair. The actual skull stops about an inch or so below there, leave yourself some room to create a wig for your character. Round out the front of the face to keep it from looking so flat.

Nice work! Looking very good. Just want to chime in with something, don't let anyone tell you what "anime" is. Different shows each have their own style, some more realistic than others (Ghost in the Shell, Crying Freeman) some are super-cute and chibi or grossly exaggerated (DBZ) Do what you think looks good To heck with the naysayers.

Looking good Try using a klieg light with Z-Buffered Shadows, that way you'll get a big shadow blur instead of perfect shadows like you have. Softness of 4-5% ought to clear it up without being too blurry.
-
Thanks Rodney, Vern. Its mentioned in the tute, but I thought I should say it again here. Make sure you set your ambiance color per group to Zer0. Otherwise the rich black ink-look gets washed away. For lighting I just use a single klieg light which seems to work fine. Oh yea, the characters actual skin uses the method from the lower part of the anime shading tute.

Put up the tutorial, you can also click on the material spheres and download each .mat listed. http://demented3d.com/tutorial/comic/

Seems like every time I model one of these toon characters I say I'll animate them but I never get around to it. (like the elf chick in my avatar) I want to animate this character and I plan to, but no promises =)

Thanks everyone Yea I should have tilted the sword a bit, my bad. Wade - there's a coincidence, once I finished rigging her I was planning on doing a version of this purple character - http://demented3d.com/krick.jpg (pic is a lil dark I know. Also that's a CoH screenshot, not my work.) As for exaggerated features, it's a wonder most comic book women dont snap their lower back with all the weight on their chest hehe. The shades are all about 'tude Will update the toon shading tutorial soon. There's only 1 light in the entire choreography. The toon shader is setup to fake rim lighting and stuff.

Been playing with the toon shader again, definitely more of a inked comic-book style this time. (Been playing City of Heroes) Tomorrow or the day after I'll update my toon-shading tutorial with how to get this look.

doh! been a bit busy lately. Will post something soon I hope.

Here are a few seconds of animation, both Katrina and the Demon. Things are still a bit rough, havent put any dynamic constraints into Kat's hair or anything else. Need to build a decent background set sometime soon. http://demented3d.com/3d/kat/kat-wip-a.avi 1 meg, DivX. Will keep updating as work continues

You should straighten out the chin a little more and put some definition into the mouth and lips so it doesnt look like a hole.
-
Nice progress! He looks short tho, stretch him up in the Y direction some.
-
You're off to a good start, but you need to exaggerate and make his features more harsher. A bigger chin, bring those eyebrows out. Straighten out the jawline. Try to remember when modeling that this guy looks like he is carved out of rock. Gargoyles is one of my all-time fave cartoons, it's cool to see it get the 3D treatment.
-
Looks pretty good. From the side it seems like the legs are a bit skinny in comparison to his massive chest/neck. either bulk them up or make his chest a bit skinnier.
-
'nother pic, attaching. Hutch: Some of the lines have been buggin me too. After I get a sequence animated I'm gonna try rendering it out without lines. (but with the toon shader still turned on) See how that goes.

Took all day yesterday but I managed to download your short. It was very cool, I enjoyed it a lot Thanks!

Heroines always need some nasty beast to beat the crud out of, so I put together this demon for her to fight. Also updated the shading and line tutorial sections on my site to cover how I'm doing these toons. http://demented3d.com/tutorial Looking at my renders they're a bit more western-style comic book than anime.. but that's OK with me

Thank you everyone! Here are a few more pics: Closeup - http://demented3d.com/3d/kat/kat-closeup.jpg Wireframe - http://demented3d.com/3d/kat/kat-wire.jpg Default Lighting/No Toon Shader - http://demented3d.com/3d/kat/kat-notoon.jpg

Updated the image, gonna attach it in case my web server dies again. Modeling's done, now I just need to do some smartskinning, tweak the rig a bit and setup some facial pose sliders! yay! Javier, your suggestion made a big difference, thanks!
-
Thanks all Yea, it's using the toon shader. Javier: Thanks, I'll try that and see how it works out.

Working on an anime-style elf, almost done. Just a lil more accessorizing and final rigging. AM 10.5
