OT: I was using softimage today at university, AM is far more intuitive!

Here is my latest attempt at a head, theres stil tweaking to be done but its a step in the right direction. I was hoping to use Yves skin shader, alas! Im on osx so i will have to remain patient! Once I remember how to flatten the mesh again I'll texture it. Anyone know of a good eye tutorial? Anyway critique welcome.

I had a go at making a game in the games factory (an older version of multimedia fusion i think) had it looking quite pretty considering i was using macromedia extreme 3d. I can see AM being far superior especially for charactor animation.
RPG/action adventure? - Heres one im looking forward to!
good luck, il be watching.

Hmmm,
To be fair I seem to be leaning towards the mac route, I will be hanging onto my pc base unit, but will either leave it at university or home with the folks, The plan is to get a mac lappy to take between them. I know Jim is a blatant mac head and so it scares me that hes putting me off but Im still keen! Im not worried about the new features that much I really want to just learn to modal rig and animate better first.
Il let you know how it goes - thanks guys - Nixie

hmmm It is a very difficult choice,
The major uses of any potential system will be:
AM - This is my major concern, I hear its not perfect at the moment but will eventually catch up with the pc version; (does anyone know how far off it is?)
Image editing - I have seen old versions of photoshop available on ebay this is no real problem
video editing - I-movie/final cut/superdrive - all I need for now, additionally garageband sounds very interesting...
I would also like to do word processing and search the net, it goes without saying that this would be easy to sort out.
As for games, Iv had so much hassle with them on pc's in the past that I have been put off bothering with them; I have a gamecube for that anyway.
I have an old serial wacom tablet that Id like to use too but im not sure if its possible to connect to a mac lappy? And whats with the updates? dangerous cats? do I have to update the os to keep AM running? and will I be able to boot into os 9 for stability in AM or will i need to buy an old os?
Thankyou for your time - Regards, Nixie

Hello fellow Hashers,
I am about to head off to university here in blighty to do a traditional animation course and was hoping to get a laptop to Hash on and generally use whilst there. I was wondering if anyone could help me decide weather I should convert to mac (I have been using a pc now for a while) the changeover wont be much of a problem, I have used macs before and favour the no nonsense way that osx operates; But my major concern is, will AM work as well on a mac? more specifically a powerbook 15 or 17 inch?
Any response is greatly appriciated,

This Is awful to say the least. I like everyone else am saddened and shocked by this and give my condolences to you Robert. There is little more Words can carry, but know that my thoughts are with you at this time.

I was recently choosing a place at university and decided to plump for a 2d course as my first option. I feel better grounding in general animation would be beneficial to the work environment in its entirety. I will still be playing with animation master in my own time to build up a portfolio of sorts, and hope that the course will help me to produce better animation throughout the whole process.

yeh, but does it animate the in-focus distance? I have a very complex scene which takes ages for each frame to render, (multipass) and in the render settings id usually set the DOF to the same settings that the camera in chor is set to. but these settings change over time! sorry if I didnt make it clear!

Hello!
Right, I've animated the depth of field but cant figure out what to put in the render settings, Ive rendered images this way by inputting the depth of field measurements, but now they vary over time, not constant? Who can help me!
Thankyou awfully! Nixie

Thats really nice!
I think that would make a very interesting 3d render. And Im not sure how the gallery works.

In AM, Splines are meshes, and meshes are splines! the add tool (or *A* key) adds a control point, click further along to get another with a spline connecting them. Hash splines maintain a curve along their length which is why an AM mesh will not require to be as dense as a 3DS one to remain smooth.
To make a modal in AM you must connect splines in certain ways to get Valid "patches" that will render as a shaded surface. When you get proficiant in using these, its alot like knitting. You weld one control point to another by welding them with the right mouse button.

Id reccomend looking at the basic splinemanship tutorials on here.
I hope that helped, I typed pretty quick there so sorry for any errors, I have an interview to prepare for and a portfolio to produce!

Maybe you could enter the next animation contest, topic: mad! talking to yourself is the first sign of madness so im told!
Gradient looks good, I actually liked the colour of the other one though! looked like a pleasent dusk scene.

I use this effect with multipass on, you need quite alot of passes for a nice look but im not sure you can use it without. correct me if I'm wrong!
Nixie
Edit: I am wrong! but multipass does look alot better than regular render!

have you set the group (or modal) properties of the backdrop to 100% Ambient? this way it will light itself, turn specularity size and amount to 0% and that ought to do it.
Hope that helps,

I had something which sounds similar, I had a pose slider that had somehow managed to control itself as a relationship or somesuch, basicaly it was stuck in an invalid loop of some kind that whenever i invoked the pose, AM would die. I sent it to hash and they told me the prob and fixed it, then sent her back. Id suggest doing the same. I was asked to try and repeat it but I couldnt.

Cheers Gonzo3d, I visited Colins site, but couldnt fint the uber eye, saw the tutorial though; I will follow it soon. If anyone has downloaded the model, do they have any suggestions? I want to get the splines 100% accurate before I move onto her body. I'm using porcelain and it seems to muck up the mesh on random occasions which is an annoyance since i'm going to aim for photorealism as much as possible. see the attached image to see what i mean (look at the ear lobe and pronounced lines throughout.) Again, thanks. Il take a screen grab of the wireframe for those not interested in downloading the model file.
Kind regards - Nixie
