Hello - reply requested either here or in PM. I'm about to give up on AM at this point. A refund of my $300 would be acceptable as well.

Thanks Rob, the problem was that hard drive crashed and it was a struggle to try and get windows up and running again, literally had to install windows to a spare laptop, then clone it to another drive and then boot pc ( Mac Pro 5.1 ) again, I think even if I reinstalled it again on the same drive it would have changed host id, but that ssd look like it was on its way out, have messaged Jason :)

I can see now my head was not clear at the time of writing that. To be honest I can't bear to read it, but I'll leave it as a reminder. Otherwise, I have a project I'm starting back up on that may be of interest to some here. I'll start talking about it in a fresh post, but it involves a website mostly. I just renewed the domain which was a relief, so should be good to start.

The big divide is v13. You can take models and files from v12 and earlier forward to v13 and later but you can't take models and files from v13 and later backward to v12 and earlier. This will be zero problem for your plan to open your old files in modern A:M but in the event of some insanely unlikely reason you wanted to go from modern A:M to v12... that can't be done. That is why I say to not write over your old v12 files... just in case you ever need to use them in v12. Re save them with new file names from v19. Not that you can still run v12 today even if you wanted to, but that's another story.
-
Thanks Robcat! I'm relieved I will still be able to access those files. I put a lot of work in them and it'll will be fun to start working on 'em.
-
I'm not aware of any way to prevent that. My suggestion is to send Jason your host id per the directions here... https://www.hash.com/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=15&id=17&artlang=en and then put your old HD back in your computer and continue working as before until Jason is able to get you an updated license.
-
Hi all, I upgraded my pc hard drive to a larger capacity by cloning my hard drive and now my license is not valid, checked the host id and it has changed, is there a way to stop this from happening, I wish we still had dongles, would be super good right about now so I dont have to bug Jason all the time, especially when you need transition to a new computer

Paddle in for some answers to your A:M questions at Live Answer Time... Noon CDT Saturday May 24 2025. German-American Painter Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze was born on this day in 1816 Washington Crossing the Delaware (1851) Of course, we all know one should not stand up in a small boat, but that seems minor compared to the fact that there are... two horses... in the next boat over. lawl . . . all the greatest techno / trance record covers of that time . . . Bryce + Poser yep novelty at best and the god awful rendering speed line by line by line
-
It's cool to hear other peoples stories, all roads lead to A:M! I played around with Bryce and Poser, but the novelty wore off when needed something other than a procedural landscape with clouds and water. 😜

love your work man 🤘 That's beautiful

I think we had ( Art School ) Ray Dream first, then Moved to Infini D . . . then Lightwave, ( wasnt a big fan ), some of our lecturers were employed by companies and universities using Softimage on SGI gear I was like man can we go to your work and play to which they replied, only if you want to make 3D with command prompts - eeecch!! I thought the isometric graph interface would be good transitioning from graph paper drawings for Ray Dream . . . but it was not and it was slooooowwwww on the schools Macs . . . I picked up AM when I started my first job in advertising, we had to produce some ads and infini d wasnt cutting it, one of the guys at our company told us about Dylan Perry from then Momentum, he made a call and Dylan dropped past with AM 96 / 98 I think, gave us a 15 minute quick start guide . . . I produced 2 x 30 second TVC's like in a couple of hours, the modelling was exactly how it ought to be, the rendering, rigging was so intuative . . . rendering, rigging, the works ! best app ever, ran fast on macs and pcs but it did crash a lot back then ha ha . . . so did you eve use Bryce 3D or Poser lol

In 2002, my friend Paul and I started our own 3D animation studio using the old office that Streamline Media originally occupied. It was one of the most exciting yet stressful times of my life I never thought keeping a sleeping bag in the office closet would be a good idea until then. We were trying many things to promote the studio, Focus Chaos Inc. so I submitted my Valentine's Hash image contest entry to 3D World magazine and then completely forgot about it. It wasn’t until our friend Steve, who rented us the office came in one day and told me he saw my image in a magazine at the bookstore! I still have a copy of the magazine, 3D World May 2002.

I tried Ray Dream Studio 5 recently for the nostalgia of it and it made me realize why I was so happy to find A:M. just moving the camera around alone was so tedious.

Hi Will, They should work fine. I have many v11.1 files from long ago that I have opened recently and they work properly. Don't re-save over your old v12 files. This could inadvertently happen if you open an old PRJ that includes MDLs or other files that are NOT embedded in the PRJ and then you do a save of the PRJ.
-
Hi folks! Oh so long ago I did several animation projects in v12 and now I am interested in picking up where I left off on one of them. Will the current version even open files that old? What later version could open those files? Thanks for your help, Will

Windows 11, 3D Painter, AM Loading Work in GPU Memory . . .
robcat2075 replied to a.quaihoi's topic in Open Forum
I haven't gone to Windows 11 yet so i can't speak on that but i haven't heard of anyone else on Win 11 being dramatically hindered. There will be a slight rendering slowdown in v19.5 overall. Steffen says that a library that was used in v19.0 is no longer supported by the compiler. For 3D Painter contact I've sent you Filip's email. He says he bought lifetime hosting for his website but apparently they meant someone else's lifetime! -

Hey Rob, interface / real-time & general usage, when I was installing it on initial launch it took a while, registering plugins ?? then was quite sluggish and became more sluggish, I was monitoring system temps cpu / ram etc. etc. and the computer was not throttling down, even with real-time subdivision bumped all the way down it was still sluggish, mysteriously today it seems to be working quick again . . . 🫤 . . . think somethings dying on this old computer . . . time for a upgrade -

Slower in what regard? Rendering? Real-time playback? The interface?
