I've heard of it via a previous Adobe preview but haven't got my hands on it.

I can see it being useful is a variety of situations.

Can't use what you don't have though... some folks must be beta testing because animation with the program is starting to show up.

If you are into Adobe CC you might want to check out Dragon Bones as well. It is one of serveral programs that has filled in the gaps when Adobe moved away from their old approach to Bones in After Effects; a move that left a lot of animators hangin'.

In both cases it'd be mostly a matter of setting up the character in A:M in such a way as to create the parts for use in Adobe CC

Here's a video that walks through Character Animator from the After Effects blog:

According to the blog Character Animator (Preview 1) is said to be installed with the next update of After Effects CC.

Of additional interest is that the facetracking technology can be used with After Effects itself:

Face Tracker effect: We’ve also taken the face-tracking technology from Adobe Character Animator and integrated it into After Effects as a highly accurate face tracker that can generate masks to isolate faces or, in detail mode, generate effect control points for every major feature of the face. This makes attaching effects, layers, or other objects to specific facial features incredibly easy and precise, making workflows such as digital makeup, creative eye replacement, and others much easier than in the past.
