I really like the two to three frame animations (they are via mouse roll-overs on the page).

I love how an animated action can be communicated within two or three frames.

 

On that top animation of the guy blowing out the birthday candle he cheats a bit by having the smoke continue to move on the otherwise still image so we'll have to call that at least three images. I don't think the animation would be as effective with only two images. Most require a minimum of three. He's made very effective use of technology in how he has used two images with the second one being an animated gif activated by the mouseover.

 

The magic of animation. :)

 

The section titled PLANNING KEY POSES at the second link is 'must read' material in my estimation.
