Admin Rodney Posted October 11, 2011 Admin Share Posted October 11, 2011 Warning: This topic is not strictly about A:M Libraries but rather some of the underlying themes that make collections of resources useful. If you have some time to kill, consider the subject of libraries and what others do with them... Sam Register is in the rather difficult position of keeping the Warner Brothers collection relevant and this Keynote speech at Mipcom Jr discusses their current approach to keeping their characters (collections/libraries) relevant. There are also a lot of little relevant sidetracks that you can get out of the speech such as the benefits of using CG over hand drawn animation (yes... be glad you are working with A:M... there are benefits to CG and some of them have to do with libraries). Like it or not reuseable resources aren't going away. How they will be used is at the core of our consideration. Warner Bros' competition is certainly paying attention. Disney's purchase of the Marvel lineup of characters gives them access to thousands of design elements, ideas and storylines set to capture new generations. Assets created can be used in a wide variety of venues, modified, reused and re-purposed over and over again. In my estimation the Green Lantern series outtakes are well representative of animation that could have easily been produced by folks in this community. Well worth looking at for that alone. The same goes for the Daffy Duck animation. We may not have the resources of a Disney or Warners but we can do similar things with our resources on a smaller and more personal scale. (It would have been nice to hear the questions Sam Register responded to at the very end as that would give us a good idea of what he thinks is 'too expensive' to produce in animation. Then we could place more of our focus there. )
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted October 11, 2011 Hash Fellow Share Posted October 11, 2011 They all look like that. When I used to go to animation festivals and go to the panels, the animation executives always wore the same all-black power-hipster uniform and now I see they still do. The actual creatives, the writers, directors, animators, voice talents... they didn't have a uniform. But the executives all look the same. Admin Rodney Posted October 13, 2011 Author Admin Share Posted October 13, 2011 So, I was dreaming in splines again today... Libraries have such an untapped potential that I'm having a difficult time knowing where to start focusing with regard to this topic. When I awoke this afternoon (I'm working midshift) I had five separate applications related to libraries on my mind. At the center of them all was just one guy; Henry Ford. Internal versus External Libraries Manufacturing/Production Distribution/Piracy Languages/Conversions Customization/Modification Extremes/Constraints (at the core of this is the saying attributed to Henry Ford, "You can have any color (of car) you want as long as it's black.") Whoops, that's six. An odd assortment of topics to be sure and I'll die long before I can adequately address any of them. The ideas are mercurial and fleeting, and I want to remember them. So that's why I've written them down here. Mostly because I want to apply some of them to A:M in my lifetime. So, what do these have to do with Libaries? Read on...
