Is there a way to turn the X/Z axis into a shaded texture map?

 

I'm also making a road, but I'll probably make it finite.

the ground plane?

 

The default ground is a model that you can texture and resave with a new name. You can scale it larger, but not to infinity and beyond.

Here's a quick example using a simple narrow plane model with a darktree texture

darktree material included ground plane just set to green with roughness
