In the model window... right-click>New>pose>percentage

in the new "relationship" window that comes up repose the finger in the way you want it to be.

Hopefully you have your pose slider window open too (ALT-4). It will highlight your new slider in RED at 100%. you can slide it to other values besides 100% if you want to set the finger in other specific ways at other values.

close the "relationship"window when you are done. Now when you use your character in a chor or action you can use that pose slider to make something happen,

I don't recommend using a pose slider for that sort of thing, but you certainly can do it.

I think Ken is recommending that you approach your animation in an action or a choreography...that 'pre-canned' actions will look as such. I happen to take the same approach you are for all of my characters I will make a LEFT HAND FIST and RIGHT HAND FIST pose...then in animation, since hands are usually not needed to always be articulating, I will simply walk the value for both up and down so that the hands are always slightly evolving from the flat modeled pose to about a 25% fist and back and this keeps them from looking 'dead'...
