If you have the time and some money I bought these CD's:

http://www.creationengine.com/html/p.lasso?p=13199

They were $40 + shipping, and well worth it.

The basics:(this is off the top my head)

1. still picture: Add it into your camera as a rotoscope(you may have to change the rotoscope to a projection map)

2. In a model: build a basic shape of the picture (shape of the room, or location the character will be.)

3. Add the model to the project, and line up the camera

4. In the Project work space change the model to be flat shaded and receive shadows

5. Add lights

6. render

It is important to know the location of the camera( measure the heights, distance from object, angle), lights, and measurements of the area.

This is a good example too,

The easiest way to do this is to use motion capture software. If want want free software to do this you should try Icarus. You can download it and find tutorials here : http://www.peerlessproductions.com/tuts/pages/Icarus.html

A tutorial how to bring your captured data into A:M you can find here: http://www.zigncreations.com/icam

That is quite easy if you dont need many cameraflights etc. ... render your character/effects with Alpha-Channel...

Then use "Render Shadow Only" to bring shadows in... you will need to model an aproximated environment where shadows will be caught by the environment...

Now you need a software like AfterEffects (or you can make some of it in A:M with layers and the new NLE-feature)...

But if you want a motiontracker you will need AE or something equal. (Icarus is although possible).

Import your video and the TGA-sequence you rendered from A:M and the TGA-sequence for the shadows of course.

Now use the motiontracker or whatever you want...
