jamagica Posted December 28, 2004 Posted December 28, 2004 I'm starting up a hip hop site and this will be one of the graphics included...I still have to create a label on the Record and add the grooves, along with labeling the power button Quote
jamagica Posted December 29, 2004 Author Posted December 29, 2004 I can't figure out a good way to add grooves in the record..I was thinking of just using a bump map of some grooves, but that would take some time to make Quote
jamagica Posted December 29, 2004 Author Posted December 29, 2004 Ok..I tried the bump map idea with a bitmap image (best I could use)..I added a decal (don't mind the CBR..it's the name of an artist)..tell me what you think Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted December 29, 2004 Hash Fellow Posted December 29, 2004 I know not of this hip-hop thing you speak of, however... The needle arm on a turntable is always positioned so that it can sweep across the radius (from center to edge) of the record. The arm you have now would be scraping the needle sideways on the innermost grooves of the record. Rather than trying to literally model the grooves with a bump map (they're just too small) I think a better strategy might be to fashion a decal that would imitate the pie-cut shaped reflections the grooves cause. That's what has always said "phonograph record" in almost any image of a record since... Emile Berliner? Quote
jamagica Posted December 29, 2004 Author Posted December 29, 2004 wouldn't I still have to make some grooves for that idea? Also, do you mean the needle should be "turned" a bit to the side to be almost horizontal to the label? Quote
jamagica Posted December 29, 2004 Author Posted December 29, 2004 Ok..I observed some more records and think I know what you mean..do you mean something like this: Quote
Malaclypse235 Posted December 29, 2004 Posted December 29, 2004 I wish I had a record around to test this, but I don't so here is a theoretical idea that might be terrible. If you take a picture of a record using a bright light, it might bring out enough detail in the grooves for you to convert it to greyscale and use as a bump map. If it works it should be pretty quick and easy if you have a record and a digital camera lying around. Ok, I just found a (semi crappy) image of a record on the net. despite the picture's lack of quality I get fairly good results using it as a color and bump map. See below. I hope this helps some... jamagica Posted December 29, 2004 Author Posted December 29, 2004 That's what he means..well if I just make a sphere and cut out a pie shape, put a light behind it, I could easily achieve this if I keep the bump map I have now Quote
