  1. Well, I threw something together to test the hair approach ... The render took my machine too long to render with translucency+transparency, so I rendered it without. I guess it doesnt help to have a huge map for the feather. anyway I think it would just need to be rendered with some ambience and it would look more angelic... you may have to change a lot of parameters... I changed the ambience and it looks more angel-like... I also added a render of the mesh splines.

  2. You would get a faster responce by posting this at:

That is the General discussion/Animation Master topics.

Well, you are not asking for something easy here... You could use decaled geometry , but hair would be the easiest way... you would have to use a map of a feather with an alpha map that cuts the shape of the feather out of the hair. Hair can be shaped like a feather using the timeline editor... and the feather color can be varied using the features of hair available in properties. There is a tutorial for this. goto the A.R.M. and search there. Or do a search on this forum... try "v12 hair" or "hair feathers".

  4. Hi Rich,

In an effort to get my project going... i asked my buddy John to play with the Earth Federation of Planets logo in adobe illustrator to see what he could come up with. It is all vector based and can be brought in to Master. thats why i like illustrator so much. Hope you dont mind. He took your logo and went a little creative with it.

    What do you think?

if you like it, i can send the illustrator and AM versions.

    John H

OH MY GOD!! IT'S FULL OF STARS!!!!! I LOVE IT!!! PLEASE SEND!!! I'll have to give your friend credit for doing it when I use it... it goes on the uniforms, space suits, space ships, space stations. Of course I'd rather have it in blue for my purposes, because of the NASA look. Actually, in my story, the back story suggests that NASA becomes the EFOP, although there is still a NASA headquarters on earth and the leading governments also... the merging of spacetravel-aeronaughtics and government is the EFOP.-- hope that wasn't TMI.

  5. Hi Bob,

We will be meeting in philadelphia. Don Davis will post direction information closer to the date.

I missed your birthday John- sorry!

    HAPPY B-DAY!!

And Bob, it's in "Center City" Philadelphia to be specific.

I'm posting the logo here John... If you want the photoshop document, with layers and all,

I will send to you after I find the damn thing... I think I archived that sucker.

I used the photoshop tut that Vern did (over at the A.R.M.) to get the text around the circle. Took a lot of trial and error!

  6. Top Ten things for Rich to do at the MAAMUG meeting

    1. You can keep me company during smoke breaks!

    Can do!

    2. When I show off my stuff... I want you to "oooh" and "ahhh" a lot.

I thought I already had that one covered.

    3. Create a polygon import/export plugin that is "perfect" and demo it at the meeting.

What? And risk having to become a Hash employee??? The work arounds are too much fun... LOL...

    4. Tell me I look like I have lost weight even if you don't think so.

Only if you tell me I looked like I gained weight.

    5. Come up with the perfect UV/decaling technique that will revolutionize AM use.

Keep it a secret so only WE will have this knowledge.

    What is UV/decaling??

    6. Tell me what a waste of talent it would be if I got a part time job at McDonald's.

They pay pretty good... I don't know about the 401k, though.

    7. Visit my dead beat clients and tell them you know Kung Fu and will kill them with

only your thumbs if they don't pay me.

How about I just dress up like a member of Al-Queda and strap myself with gernades and visit them?

    8. Assure me that all this strange weather is not a sign of the end times.

    Actually, it is.

    9. Bring in and show us the painting from your attic of you as an old man.

As long as I don't have to look at it!

    10. Bring the Yeti AM disk and the Orangutan Disk and do a finger puppet show.

So, I am the "court jester" of the MAAMUG meetings.... I knew it!

Maybe Rich can build "Web Man!!!"

John, will I be doing that the "A:M" way or the "Doctor Frankenstein" way?

Or just show up a little early to help set up.

    Sure, I'll be there!

  7. Like Vern, I have been "inside" way too long... and my social existance has been - WORK-SLEEP-EAT-WORK-EAT-SLEEP-EAT-SLEEP-WORK - anyway... it's getting old! Any date would be fine with me... I have no other focus at this time, so I'm available to throw myself into this completely as possible. I miss y'all greatly. I don't have anything much to show. I have not moved much from what I've shown you last time around.

Thankyou sooooo much, Don, for this. I think we all are ready for this.

  8. I see he has some weight. But it's not enough from this camera position. The director would tell the actor to give it a little more "umph"!

The weight is just not there... needs some more lifting in the arcs as he steps forward. Not too much or he'll look like he's leaping.

  9. oh...about the rigs. If you use the basic skeleton that the program has, then add bones to it, say for tails or something, can you still use the reusable animations? To be honest, I'm not looking for the computer to do all my animating, just wanna be smart with time.

Yes... and actually if you make your own rig just make the names the same and try to keep the proportions similar and you can even use the actions with your own rig. Adding bones will not change what is already in the action... hence-"reusable action"...

And I welcome new users, too! Can't wait to see your work.

  10. It's true that volumetrics and the toon shader don't play well together. But in this case, that's actually the unrenderable-frames bug I mentioned in my previous post. I hope it gets fixed soon!

You could do the volumetrics as a seperate pass and just flat render the objects in the scene as black objects. Then take the volumetrics pass and add it in later. The render time will be better. Plus you will be able to edit the intensity of the volume lighting later if you wish. Light effects are best done in post anyway, I believe. It depends so heavily on other objects in the scene to make it look good. Just a suggestion of a work around till it's fixed.

    EDIT******

You and Flog and Smudge are so inspirational. There are a lot of talented people here and hope you guys keep it up. Don't be a quitter like me!

By the way... Once you work out the kinks in the rendering and modeling and rigging and animating... things will start to go faster for you. I've modelled my main character four times... I'm getter better and faster at it and my rigging has become more refined... it won't take you five years to do a half-hour movie! momentum is on your side!

  11. The hair map's group is before the skin group... that's why her head has that dull overtone... Move the hair group in last place of groups... or after the skin group.

She could use another group of finer hair at the forhead to blend the hair edge better. Use the same hair map.

  12. You could use hair with maps of "puffs" of clouds cookie cut. The Hair would have to be thick and almost flat to pull it off... and the patches you use to emitt them should probably be like a solid clump shape.

    EDIT#

you could even have the hair emitt from the skydome using a map-- like what's being done in the forum where they are using painterly hair!

I haven't had time to do anything in A:M for a while, this was the next thing I was going to try... I'll let you know if it works for me, unless you try it and post first.

  13. The first one is fantastic, but it's kind of quick at the portion when the 'wormhole'(??) effect begins... the Earth is blotted out... maybe you could fade it in some places so we can still see the planet. You must be reading the minds of every scifi fan out there... good work!

  14. Well, you should look at it with some lights on it in the chor. Testing it under those lighting conditions will let you know if you need the lip edge loop or not. The lighting in the action or camera view doesn't help there.

  15. I had thought about constraining the feet and hands to some invisiable spot ,but then couldnt figure out the rest...LOL

You have a valid point there... they could be nulls translated to the proxy hands and feet, with "lag" on the translations... they would follow the proxy's hands and feet... then you could translate the "hero" rig's hands and feet to these "lag" nulls. You would only have to animate the proxy rig without dealing with the pose sliders for each limb.

  16. NICE so far!

Keep at it, once you're past the nose and eyes you get to work on the dreaded ear!!!

If you include as much detail in the ears... you'll have no problem, but you will be adding a lot of hooks.
