  1. OK I was asked by Holmes to take over this shot. I'll try to use some of the poses but I have a different view of the scene. The script calls for Pessim to be off the toad and mount it. I think this would look cool and be an interesting challenge so I am going to add that if I can.

Stay tuned. Updates will be coming.

    George

EDIT: I guess it's time for bed hehe. I read the script wrong. Pessim is on the toad and will stay that way.

  2. Yay Ulrika! Thank you for posting these.

The popping of the "Ps" and "Bs" is kind of hard to ignore in the audio. The other thing is that Pessim is a tiny little man, but his voice doesn't sound that way at all. It sounds like he is about as large as Tin Man. Does anyone know how to run Jason's voice through some kind of processor to make him sound really small?

I have a sound editing program that can make him sound smaller. If I do this, it should also be done for the rest of the shots. Do you want me to do it? I can post a sample render to show you.

  3. Technically, you could export from Inventor into A:M but the results would be no better than any polygon conversions. You'd still be doing so much spline adjusting that it would not be worth it. Much better to just model in A:M.

One point about the CAD programs mentioned here:

The programs TNT mentioned cost thousands of dollars I believe (I know Pro-E is in the thousands at least). Inventor is about $2000.00 and is designed for mechanical applications and would in NO WAY compete with A:M with rendering, organic modeling or even hold a candle to A:M in animation. It was this reason that I added my post without worrying about competing with A:M.

Why would ANYONE pay thousands for basically a mechanical engineering program if your goal is to created CG graphics, animations, and very detailed renders?

It was off topic but I didn't think it would be that big a deal to respond to TNT's post.

  4. I'd add Solidworks and the one I used at my company was Autodesk's Inventor.

Both these programs are parametrically driven also. I'm sure about Solidworks but I can tell you that Inventor has limited ability but can definitely be used for CNC, molding and engineering design.

What's great is it's completely compatible with the Pro-E format Iges. It also can export to 3DS and DXF.

Maybe not a giant but good 3D modeling programs for the price.

  5. Hey George!

    Congrats on finishing the sequence!

I can't wait to see it incorporated into the film will all the backgrounds, texutures and other assortments.

I'm torn between trying to encourage people that are struggling with life's challenges to hang out here in the forum more or break away so they can more fully concentrate on the challenges in the 'real world'.

Whether online or offline I hope you've got a good friend or two who support you.

    That's what friends are for.

    Thank you Rodney :)

I'm dealing with my job loss now. It was tough for a while but I do have a large family and a few friends that are helping me cope. I'll be popping in to the forum regularly as I did before. My brother and I were discussing making a very very short animation just to say we completed one. I also was looking at another SO shot to volunteer for.

Although I could never animate day in and day out as a career, I can't seem to just let it go. There's a conflicting urge to animate that time always seems to renew for me. Animating is both very pleasurable (when I get it reasonably good) and VERY frustrating (when I don't ) but I can't stop hehe. It's a "love/hate" relationship for me

  6. Man Stian you are an incredible master of spline manipulation. This project is coming out awesome (as all your stuff does).

I can't wait to see this thing textured and rendered. Is this for a client or just some thing to challenge yourself? If it's something you decided to do, what made you decide to model it?

    It's looking great!!!!

    George

  7. Well, it's been a while. I was tired of making promises that I wasn't keeping so I decided to wait till I got my sequence done before posting anything. My problem was that I'd start working on my shot, it wouldn't come out the way I wanted it to and I'd get frustrated and needed to take a few days off to get remotivated. Then I got laid off and was too depressed to work on the shot. Anyway, I FINALLY got back to it and over the last 3 months I finished it.

    Here's a low res version (11.29mb)

    2_05_03_39.mov

This is the smallest file size I could get for the 55 second shot.

    Enjoy,

    George

    P.S.

    I'm committing the chor now.

  8. WOW! I'm finally posting. Unfortunately, It's not much. I said I had a small update and that I'd post it. That was last week before I was hit with the worst flu I've ever gotten. I've been confined to my bed for the last 4-5 days and have had no desire to do anything. Here's the small update I wanted to post.

Now that I'm feeling better, I'll get back to my assignment.

In this clip I polished Tinman only. I got rid of the floating move, added a shoulder shrug as Martin suggested in the beginning poses and added the wide eyes open look to tin when responding to Pessim.

I also shortened the response time as Holmes suggested.

  9. ok iv been experimenting with the boolean cutter and know can make some pretty good looking impact scars now, what i need know is the ability to apply a secondary material to the model so that the inside of the part that is cut away shows the secondary material. ie i blow up a metal wall and the freashly showing metal has a differat texture than the normals wall

If I understand you, you want to make the boolean cut out a different material?

Once you create the modeled steel. Create a group for it and drag the steel material to the group.

Then create a group for the cut out model that's assigned to the boolean bone and drag a material to that group.

    Render and done.

    Here's a quick example.

    booleen_example.mov

    Here's the project.

    Boolean_example.prj

  10. It's interesting. There are mov files it asked me for:

    green screen test - alpha.mov

    green screen test -transparent c+a.mov

    bruce body shot.mov

I had no link to them so I cancelled them. After the project opened, I had no problems. I had no slow downs at all in wire frame but a slight slow down in shaded mode.

If you are projecting mov's on layers (which is what I think you are doing), I think that would slow things down a lot in the choreography but I wouldn't think it would effect the model mode. I'd try to remove the mov decals (only as a test) and see if it make a difference. If not, then I'm with Master Chief in thinking it may be your computer.

  11. Not to sound dumb here but what he's discribing (if I'm understanding anyway) sounds like the red bar isn't in line with the keys maybe? If you move the red bar to where it's not in line with the keys on the timeline, it defaults to the original key channel. If the model has no keys, it will default to the arms out pose of the model.

I could be wrong here but that's my take.

    George

  12. Pretty good, I only have 6 comments!

    1) TW's torso floats to the first keyframe.

    2) TW's arm floats when he first brings it up. (That pose should probably instead be an extreme shoulder shrug.)

    3) To increase the look of hope & anticaption when TW says, "why, yes indeed!" - open his eyes all the way (force them if you have to). Do that right after P says "straw."

    4) After P says, "nor heard of him neither," make TW look more crestfallen by pushing up the bottom eyelids & pulling down the outside edge of both eyebrows.

    5) After P says, "pushing inconsiderately down with your footprint," TW should be looking at the bottom of his foot.

Thank you Martin, this is very helpful.

As to Martin's #3 item I go as far and giving TW a wide smile and then opening his mouth a little.

#4 go more extreme with facial expression maybe angry or puzzled I would over act this pose and I personally don't like the flicker eye lids but that's my personal taste it is your shot.

#5 good idea if you have time but watch TW balance you will need to shift his position to maintain CFG to do that well you may need more time?

Thank you too Mark. I really appreciate the feedback. It does help me.

    George

  13. Well, The over whelming feedback I got for my last reply here was interesting LOL. I seriously hope I'm not being shunned because of my political views.

    Mark,

I experimented with different camera angles to try to hide Tin's groin but because of the vantage point, I couldn't really do it. Then thinking about it, I don't see the problem because to me, the green color looks like pants.

I went with the facial expression because after asking my family and watching it over and over, I do like Tin's expression. Here's the whole shot with most of the main poses done. I still have a few poses that I need to add for Pessim in a couple of the last cuts and I haven't done Pessim's facial expressions.

As stated before, feedback, crits, wanted.

Here's an update but the smallest I could render it without turning it into a postage stamp is 11 meg.

    2_05_03_6.mov

  14. I found a bit of footage of a horse doing the "Hi-O Silver" style jump which is somewhat like Steve's animation in that the back feet stay on the ground while the front feet go up.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMtp9eFnb8w

But after watching it a bit it's all rather mysterious. The horse doesn't seem to be pushing off with the front feet much nor is it moving to counter balance its weight over the back legs.

After watching this a few times, I do see the horse pushing off but not upwards. It's pushing back to try to change it's center of gravity. The reason I think it looks mysterious is because of a second movement the horse makes. As the horse is pushing back with his front legs, he lunges slightly forward with his/her hind legs to try to get under the push from the front legs (much like a powerlifter does in a clean and jerk movement). The momentum the horse creates by pushing back with the front legs is then shifted instantly forward and up with a push from the hind legs. He/she didn't quite get under the push back and it caused him/her to fall forward. The movements are almost simultaneous which is why it is confusing.

    That's my take on it.

    George

  15. Watch out for continuity with the next shot....I think Jeetman is doing it....

Actually I believe David H is doing the next shot. I'm doing 2_05_03.

    George

  16. There is something that although obvious, should be emphasized:

As stated many, many times (and anyone who has seriously taken time to research the animation process can tell you) making an animation is a LOT of work. I'm sure that if all the enthusiastic movie makers out there didn't have 8 hour jobs (and higher for some) and didn't have family responsibilities that eat up their time after work, that a lot more time would be devoted to this project.

I KNOW for a fact, that if I didn't have to work and had an extra 8 hours of uninterrupted time, I'd definitely be putting in more time on this project. Unfortunately though as most of the people here, animation can only be a hobby for me and with my new responsibilities as a father figure to 2 additional family members (my 8 and 13 year old), I have very limited time.

    Let me be clear though....

I'm as dedicated to the SO project as my time allows. I was trying to get in as much animation time as I could over the Thanksgiving holiday but that turned out to be very difficult. Here's a common example of how I'm prevented from working on TWO on most of my weekdays:

I get home after picking up my 3 year old (Kira) from daycare. I check to make sure the 8 yr old and the 13 yr old are doing their homework. A lot of times, I'm asked (by both) to help them with their homework. I have a friend who comes to my house because we do a 1 hour workout together (at my house because I have a modest workout area. By the time I'm done with the homework and workout, my wife tells me it's time to eat. After I sit down and eat with my family at the dinner table, I'm thinking I'm all set and have some time to do some animating. Then either my brothers call me to hook up on the net to kill each other (LOL Battlefield 1942 ROCKS!!!) or as I fire up my computer, the 3 year old will literally pull me from the computer to have me sit with her to watch TV with her. What has started to recently happen, the 13 year old tells me she's bored and wants me to do something with her. By the time I have time to animate, I'm tired, and have to go to bed.

This is an average night not including normal cleaning and house responsibilities. This is why I've said, the best times to animate are the weekends but even the last few weekends I've been busy with other responsibilities.

  17. 'Tin Woodman of Oz' was not open for everyone to participate...

This was true is the beginning of TWO where it was required to finish TaoA:M but Martin lowered the requirements when he introduced the "Hackfest". Martin said in a post once when answering someone's question about getting involved with the Hackfest, that once you can do "The door is stuck" lesson, you can join Hackfest.Towards the end of TWO though I believe anyone was allowed to participate as it is now with SO.

  18. Day 155

I did an SVN Update today: Ken, Nancy, Holmes & I were the contributors over the past week. This was the team that finished TWO, and if we continue with SO, it looks like that will be on their backs also. I'm not sure if that is fair to them, so I'll say if anyone of that group wants out, I'll mothball SO for another time & place. I guess what I'm saying is: if Ken, Nancy & Holmes all want to continue with SO then I will...

    Making movies is hard!

I've been working on my shot I just didn't update on the svn because I haven't been able to make huge advancements due to family issues. I'll update what I have tonight.

    George
