starwarsguy Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Here's a picture of my Republic Gunship that I just finished for my Star Wars Fanfilm, Clone Commander. republicgunship.bmp Quote
jfirestine Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Not bad! Looks pretty good. Can you post some wires? I myself would strive to add more detail. Model smaller parts to have added to the body, etc. Your texture maps look good. I'm not a big fan of the new Star Wars movies. I loved the original three. Quote
starwarsguy Posted August 13, 2004 Author Posted August 13, 2004 I put small detail into it but then took it out because I'll mostly be using it for background filler. It will be far enough away so the texturing matters but the detail won't matter as much. The only thing I don't like is the front. If you look at the actual model LucasArts made, the front is curved inward towards the top. I couldn't curve it because of the shape of the body. Otherwise, I'm pretty pleased. Quote
entity Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 How about some wireframe shots... and could you also supply a side view and front views... I can't tell you whats wrong from what you're showing. other than the wierd shapes of these "Lucas-esc" type ships... you can get away with small changes to the actual plan... because when the ship is in motion... it'll be a blur anyway... and like you said far enough into the background to avoid close scrutinization. starwarsguy Posted August 15, 2004 Author Posted August 15, 2004 Here's front and side... How do you take a screenshot in Animation:Master and then get it? (for wireframe) fsgunship.bmp Quote
entity Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 In Windows machines you can just hit Alt+Insert/PrntScrn buttons ( which copies an image of your screen to the clipboard) then just paste into a new document in a photo editor or paint program. Quote
entity Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 the head on view (front view) shows that it's not narrow enough at the top and doesnt have the round corners associated with this vehicle. I hope you don't mind, but I had one more look at the movie to make sure I was seeing this right... Quote
entity Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 P.S. You don't have to take my advice, I'm no expert... But I love Star Wars and all of it's parts. You are close enough already to a likeness of the ship, but I would love to see an exacting duplicate. Thanks for sharing... I'm waiting to see it in motion! Quote
3DArtZ Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 looks good. the corners are too hard. make them a little softer..... beveling is the idea. Not many things in the real world, other than knives have such sharp edges. Good work Mike Fitz www.3dartz.com Quote
starwarsguy Posted August 15, 2004 Author Posted August 15, 2004 lol maybe i should make a knife! i can't get curves ont he edges b/c of the starnge shape of the body... Any tips? Mayeb after I show you the wireframe. I'll put it up soon. Also, on ther inset, same problem. I'm not too advanced with splinemanship so i need some help. Also, I realized those problems for I too am an obsessive Star Wars freak! lol Quote
entity Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 I couldn't help the temptation to try this... it is very difficult to do... take a look at it and try it... I had a hard time with the indented parts... but I just wanted to show you what I meant about round corners... I attached the model I tried... tstsw.mdl Quote
starwarsguy Posted August 15, 2004 Author Posted August 15, 2004 yes that would help, but i have no idea how to make a model with sides like that and an indentation like that, and how would i incorporate it with the body? i have an idea that might work, we'll see... Quote
starwarsguy Posted August 15, 2004 Author Posted August 15, 2004 is there some way to just take edges and round them out a little that i don't know about? i think i can do a good indentation for the guns though... Quote
entity Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 You may need to post a wireframe so we can see where your patches are... I couldn't even tell you without more info on what you did there. Quote
starwarsguy Posted August 16, 2004 Author Posted August 16, 2004 Here's a wireframe. It's just this side copied over and connected. I'm going to try redoing it and make a side a little smaller, then connecting them to make smooth curves. I think I've figured this out... Quote
starwarsguy Posted August 17, 2004 Author Posted August 17, 2004 Ok, I've almost finished modeling and texturing my second attempt on the body. I made smoother curves, indented the front gun holders, and redid the texture for the side. Quote
starwarsguy Posted August 18, 2004 Author Posted August 18, 2004 OK, here's the second attempt. I think it looks much better (thanks for the tips by the way). I might still have to round the wings a little and redo the cockpit, but is there anything else I should take note of? Quote
entity Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Excellent work!! Much more like the original! I love it even more. All I can see that is different from the actual one from the movie (I know you are using the GameArts version of it as your reference), is that it looks to me like the one in the movie version has rounder edges on the top of the body... I think it's acceptible as-is if your pressed for time... if not, round the top edges more, in my opinion. The Force Is With YOU! Quote
starwarsguy Posted August 18, 2004 Author Posted August 18, 2004 Ahhh, I see what you mean. Good eyes. I think I'll fix that after redoing the cockpit and rounding the wing sides. (I'm using The NEW Essential Guide to VEHICLES AND VESSELS for all my modeling, by the way) Quote
