Some years ago I recall a siggraph presentation video that demonstrated a technique for decaling real obects with an image that was floated on water.

Someone is doing that for temporary tattoos...

 

EDIT: I guess the "immersion printing" has been around for a while for simple shapes. Here is the Siggraph presentation I recall about generating decals for complex shapes...

Funny you should bring that up, I ran across that somewhere else, maybe a week or two ago.   Kinda wild it works the way it does.

There was someone that was using this technique to spruce up old Amiga computers, that had cases that were too far gone to restore via normal means.
