Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted January 1, 2023 Hash Fellow Share Posted January 1, 2023 Numerous 1927 books, films and even the song "The Best Things in Life are Free" become Public Domain and free to re-use today. Public Domain Day 2023 Quote On January 1, 2023, copyrighted works from 1927 will enter the US public domain. 1 They will be free for all to copy, share, and build upon. These include Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse and the final Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, the German science-fiction film Metropolis and Alfred Hitchcock’s first thriller, compositions by Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller, and a novelty song about ice cream. Please note that this site is only about US law; the copyright terms in other countries are different.

Public Domain Day 2023 Well at least we are starting the year off with some good news. I'm assuming under the filmed works where it says "now a lost film" that the copyright expired but there is no longer a copy of the film in existence? That is correct. A combination of few originals, multiple warehouse fires and decaying film stock have erased the existence of most early films. Occasionally someone will gather up all the publicity stills and recreate a lost film. "London After Midnight" has gotten that treatment...
