How to fill in the gaps for this model?

Can anyone help out with combining this I have been trying for a few hours to no avail.

 

Basically I cant fill the empty gap. I have too many splines on the bottom and not enough on top. When I use hooks it just causes more problems.

 

I believe you may have answered your own question here.

Perhaps the easiest approach would be to add more splines to the top that would allow you to directly connect to the splines on bottom.

Rather than have the two five point patches you could have it consist of something like this:
