*A:M User* Roger Posted April 14, 2011 *A:M User* Share Posted April 14, 2011 So it finally came today. I have to say, I'm glad I sprang for the full HD 95% gamut color screen - it simply blows every other laptop screen I have ever seen out of the water. There is absolutely no comparison. Every other screen I've ever seen on a laptop looks like trash next to this one. I haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet, I'm trying to figure out how to transfer my AM license over to it. I have a feeling it will be pretty fast, probably almost as fast as my desktop. I only have 4gb RAM right now, but that should be enough til the rest of it gets here (wasn't about to pay Lenovo's prices for the full amount of RAM - they want $480 for 16gb, street price for that is about $160). I probably won't need that much right away, but I wanted to experiment with setting up virtual machines on it. Sooooo glad I waited to get this. My only complaint about it, and this is fairly minor, is that the power brick is freakin' huge. Its about the size of an actual brick, just a bit thinner (weighs less, at least). I may see if I can find an aftermarket power adapter that is a bit more svelte.
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted April 14, 2011 Hash Fellow Share Posted April 14, 2011 Sounds cool. Keep us posted. I'm surprised at the power brick, I thought they had engineered those away.
*A:M User* Roger Posted April 14, 2011 Author *A:M User* Share Posted April 14, 2011 Sounds cool. Keep us posted. I'm surprised at the power brick, I thought they had engineered those away. I'm going to assume you mean engineered away clunky adapters and not done away with AC adapters entirely. Would be nice to lay your laptop on a mat on your desk and have it charge by induction. Would be even nicer if you could use it to charge several gadgets. I hate wall warts with a passion - god forbid you don't label it when you get it, if you toss it in a box separate from its corresponding gadget, good luck matching it back up (never understood what is so hard about putting the company or product name on it - I must have about 10 AC adapters that I have absolutely no clue what they are for). But yes, I must admit I was taken aback by the size of the AC adapter - I'm used to seeing 60 and 90 watt travel adapters. This one is 170W. I think they have a 135w adapter than can be used to charge the w520, I've heard anecdotal accounts of people using it. There must be a reason for it to be so big - I'm not an EE, but I imagine with a 45w cpu and 45w gpu it has to be big enough to charge the battery for all that.
