  1. Hi,

It was a trick used back then when there was no electricity and we have to do things under candle light! ;)

I was using a gradient materiel with an edge threshold of 45 -50% ... ( with turbulence attributes node to get a deeper color )

In my lion model (updated by Steve Sappington for the AM extra cd) the materials are set to :

the model itself (for an overeall effect)

and to color groups ( for tweaking the effect)

and groups surface properties have a diffuse falloff not set ...

quite basic trick ...but still usefull to fake velvet ,back light on skin etc

... try to reproduce it on a sphere model

  2. Well,

The sketches shows kind of generic bedroom ...

You can follow my bedroom plan or do it differently

Once a basic room created, you can fill it with differents furnitures .

Some ideas are shown on my sketches or in the reference picture...

On walls you can add curtain , wood plate , picture , light fixture

some table , couch , bed , and chair

put carpet on the floor etc.

So that way the room design will develop as you need...furniture can be use in different bedroom so...

I think the main thing , is to build a basic room of the same model so all bedroom look from the same building.

IMO keeping window and door tall would fit better for a castle.

Maybe a color theme for each room would help to locate the action?

    later

  3. Hi

In fact , the castle platform is unused in the script, and is use just for the general picture of the castle

...my intention was to get the castle aerial platform on top of a tour behind the castle somewhere.

( btw, the little chimney attached to the platform as you did is looking great but would it be dangerous for a good landing ?)

Since balloon should land somewhere and if they're landing platform in town

maybe one should be available for the castle ? This make sense but it is not essential (with the script)

IMHO it give an "original look" to the castle , keeping the design two step aside of the good old castle design shown on every story.

Also this assure a visual link between the town and the castle , sharing architectural element would help a lot in that way

I like your first platform design, the squary wood one.

... I would saw a stairway going down from a trap on the platform floor

also under or aside an elevator to handle merchandise , maybe some kind of crane ?

note that the castle landing platform should be reuse elsewhere in town... with minor change ?

and used in script scene where the heros were approaching and landing in town.

Town is an island with lot of docks , with a dock street all around.

My idea was to get a design of an harbor city , something like Amsterdam , London and other harbour city

...mid 19th century (before planes when ballon was terrific )

A sea harbour city with regular boat, ship and sea stuff but here combined with aerial dock and landing platform ,

all elements inspired from a sea harbour .

My advise would be to not keep thing too "clean", If I refere to the characacter design and texture (great work of Nancy)

it would be much more interesting. (kind of dirty chimney, iron and/or wood stuff , outside stairway )

    ...was my 2 cents

    great modeling !

    ;)

  4. I think, you should tie the ballon with more ropes ?

in french it's called "hauban" (don't know the english term ) but the sailors mount on it to get to the mast

and perhaps some plane engine ? tie each side of the ballon (like this picture shown previously on the jinxland thread)

    http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showt...30661&st=30

so all the thing can be propelled somewhere and not just go with the wind

    ;)

    great modeling

    Al

  5. Hi everybody,

Here some sketches Martin ask me to do for the Jinxland castle

I also put some ref pictures for boat and building.

Don't know if it will do the trick, take some inspiration from Quebec city

    hope this would help

    later :)

  6. Well

... as some friend say , to cover your freelancer charge like ...office rent , electricity , phone , manage e-mail etc

    I should go for 60-70$/hrs

In this case , I got to fix an estimated price to cover everything

my hourly rate just help me in my estimation

note that I add a 25 % extra on everything to get some leeway...

As a freelance graphic artist , I try to work at 25$/hrs and I don't achieve this goal all the time.

Competition is hard . more and more people are able to do graphic things...

But doing it the right way...we're not so much after all

And for 3d animation maybe I should charge higher!

so.... I WILL CRANK UP MY RATE !

    hehehe!

  7. Hmmm?

This give me some stuff to think about.

Maybe I should try to figure out some sort of scalable budget?

Splitting animation in step would give me some "flexibility" in the budget

    ---------

I have to mention here that a video file would be available...

...acting the scene with audio to use as a template

    ---------

Maybe I should cut it like that and see with the client at each step:

first step : body and head animation over a video template (10 hrs) ------- small render ------ evaluate quality

second step: rough lip synch and eyes moves (15 hrs) ------ small render ------ see with client if good enough ---- final render (based on average by frame)

thirs step : refine lip synch ----- final render (based on average by frame)------ this step would need budget extend

fourth step: refine ------ budget extend ----- final render (based on average by frame)

In this scenario I would restrict my working hours on every step.

see if the result is good enought for the client expectation and in the same time if it needed, ask for more budget .

My tought is to fit animation "quality"( I prefer ask about animation "resolution") with the client budget.

And get the best clip for the budget.

In my previous estimation , I'm probably under estimate the animation time and over-estimate rendering time...(2min/frames should be lower)

This would be a pre-project for a potential dvd...so got to get a "starting project" price

to keep the odds good and at the same don't want to burn my shorts if it go further.

    thanks for your lights folks

More comments on this topics will still be good to hear

    Al

    ;)

  8. Well,

    Holmes $300 / second for a 90 seconds clip , this would be something around $27,000.00 !!!

hehehe... and this is a low rate !

Probably those cost are for an average scene of a Pixar/Disney like project, and cover everything from scratch to final edition.

Ken, 2-3 three weeks at 40 hrs /week , so minimum 80hrs, at 25$/hrs rate , it turn around $2000

not far away from my own estimation.

I had put 25 hrs to do the animation and 90 hrs for rendering

    so at 25$/hrs for animation and 10$/hrs for rendering it would look like 625$ + 900 $ = $1525

I would add a 25% to have some leeway...so let say around 375$ for a total of $1900.00

    What do you think ?

    Al

  9. Hi,

I try to figure out how much should I charge for a 90 sec animation ?

    details:

    - upper half character animation ( tv speaker character doing presentation) no walking or full body movement

    - basic lipsynch and facial expression...

    - character rigged with squetche already done

    - dialogue audio files include

    - rendering 640X480 ( with 16:9) simple rendering setting , no extra effect or multipass

    - computer power : one guys with one machine

any estimation in time or in money will be helpful

    Thanks in advance

    Al

    ;)

  10. Ok,

I got it ! I set the smartskin on "geometry" bones ! of course !,

So starting from an action window,

I turn "on" this pose: Show and hide rig component / show_geom_bones

and select the bone and right clic to create a smartskin...do the cp adjustment (in muscle mode)and close the window (who is now a smartskin window)

I re-open and clear the first action to see it work or just create a new action.

sorry to bother with that stuff...but a little recall doesn't hurt sometime !

    hehehe :P

    thanks

    Al

  11. Hi,

I would like to set some smartskins on a model using the Squetch rig.

Usually I set smartskins on the basic skeleton previous to run the squetche rig install.

But if I got something already rigged ? , which bones should I use to set a smartskin ?

... let say for the leg , calf foot etc.

thanks in advance for any help or explinations

    Al

  12. I take a minute here to say how great I found that squetch Rig.

All those sub-system adjustments and features are just fantastic !

You did a famous work guys !

it made animation and 3d riggin a very cool and funny experience .

    thanks a bunch again !

    :):):)

  13. Hi David,

    Nice work !

About the integration of your facial/lipsynch action into my chor... here some clues.

You should exclude any action on the "head" bone in yours , since this would be part of the body animation I did.

...any action upper this "head" bone is yours and should add or replace just fine over in cho.

    ...Hope this help.

I'll try to get something ready soon too.

PS: Are you all working this out with V14 ? Is V13 would bug something ?

    :)

    thanks

    Al

  14. Hey David,

Are you working on character lipsynch for 2-09-0607 ?

Great ! , your previous work was so good.

I hope to get more anim of 2_09 soon or later.

where they rush to the castle front door...

    Thanks:)

    Al

  15. Thanks for your comments Ken,

    ...want to add :

The sets on those scenes are all proxies for now .

You're right , lights setup are slightly different in a couple scenes ...I wanted to focus lights on some point ,

especially when I use reverse camera angle and character was to much in shadow...

    **

I use the <surface><diffuse color> and <diffuse falloff> property on model shortcut to tune down lights behind characters...

This is an easy and rapid way to set the general light level around the set... to emphase ligths on character easily...

don't know if it will remain on final render with final set etc. we'll see

But all those stuff will be improved in the further revision...

I'll take your suggests in mind .

    thanks

    Al

    :)
