I think it is thin because I didn't make it thicker--I'm still learning the program. In A:M the cloak was single surface, so I had to make it thick (but not enough--however, that is easy to change).... I'm very interested in 3D printing and the ability to take an idea from design to physical object.
I agree with Robert about the difficulty--I think that the things that you have to understand make it hard for a novice. I've been doing CAD design for 15 years and I'm still struggling to learn what I'm doing...
Seeing the errors in the TAR stl are still helpful in seeing what I could/should do differently. I will probably redo to incorporate what I've learned since I worked on it. I did something recently that was a lot simpler: Yoda-Buddha which was hollow. I printed it on a Makerbot at our library and Im waiting on a bronze from Shapeways:

Stian,
Here is a solid model of it from Thingiverse.

The reason I tried making a hollow version was because the resin is so much more expensive than the PLA filament

Ken,
Whatever size you would like to have on your shelf .We have an Objet at the public library that is part of a business accelerator that I am going to print one on--so I will print as big as I can get away with...
Hollowed in ZBrush using Dynamesh, then Decimated, then exported as .stl

Ken,
Here is an .stl of TAR that I just hollowed-out. Do you want to print it and post a picture?

Thanks Everyone!!! I had a good birthday with lots of cookies & cake.

that looks very good!

A big part of the look of water is going to be the environment that it reflects and refracts. Rather than coloring the surface, try puting a skydome around it.

For the waterfall, you might have an easier time achieving what you want with Sprites. I know that they were used for the extended edition of the Phantom Menace ( they show how it was setup in the behind the scenes), and also in the Dam bursting scene in LOTR: The Two Towers...
Another option would be a video layer(s) of a real waterfall, combined with particles.
-
I would let them have the files, as is (the A:M files). They are going to have to either redo everything from scratch--or hire you as a consultant!
-
On TAR's cloak, I remember tweaking as massaging the simulation, tweaking the mesh by hand, re simulating from a fixed frame, over and over again...by the end I was getting pretty comfortable with cloth (and vowing to lose the cape--LOL)
-
I was just thinking that if the sequence was long, then you would have a lot of frames of video in RAM before it ever gets to compressing and saving as a video file.... I usually render as frames
-
Could you be out of RAM?
-
I would like to see that too! I have acted out my shots and used it as a rotoscope to get the timing right, going frame-by-frame to match my performance/reference. But if I could just act it out and have the character repeat it, that would be pretty great! Maybe the debate about performance capture versus animation would be moot if it was the animators capturing themselves

feel free to embed mine!

I might be getting the new Form1+, getting to the point it isn't cost effective for me to send out. If I do get one I'd be happy to run stuff out for the people here, certainly wouldn't cost $80 since the material is much much less and total machine costs is far less than what I had been using. They have a several materials to print from nearly crystal clear, white, gray and super fine resolution black. I had a sample part come back and the resolution is much better than the polyjet machines out there.
I also want to get the Form1+. But my wife insists that I wait... I'm focusing on learning digital sculpture, so that I can expand my opportunities in the 3D Printing space...

I think the tools are there to facilitate a distributed studio. What is lacking is the business and distribution plan to finance it. I want to be able to hire animators--but I need to figure out how to make money with the end product.
Otherwise, we can always collaborate on a project where the creators all share joint copyright. Like being in a garage band

Cool!

Automatic. But if you clone textures and export them separately (such as Normal Map), flip them vertically. (I think you can make that a preference)
-
no--you aren't reading the whole thread... I am using the OBJ Importer--they are now PATCH models, with all of their texture information converted to DECALs
So they can be rigged and animated in A:M

Using "draw" in the sense of draughtsmanship is a completely different meaning from "draw" as in attract...
You said "the Psalmist" in your quote of scripture, that was King David; But the passage is from Proverbs 25, which is attributed to his son Solomon. It also looks like the quote was only partial because there is nothing about "...And our eyes will be instinctively drawn to that imagery..."
11 A word fitly spoken
is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.
12 Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold
is a wise rebuke to a listening ear.
13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest
are faithful messengers to those who send them;
they refresh the spirit of their masters.
14 Like clouds and wind without rain
is one who boasts of a gift never given.
15 With patience a ruler may be persuaded,
and a soft tongue can break bones.
16 If you have found honey, eat only enough for you,
or else, having too much, you will vomit it.
17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house,
otherwise the neighbor will become weary of you and hate you.My art teacher in high school was fond of that book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Edwards and another one called "The Natural Way to Draw" by Nicolaides. I remember doing some exercises from them, but never read them myself...
Some books that were very helpful to me in learning to draw were by Andrew Loomis. An editor at Marvel Comics actually photocopied the entire "Figure Drawing for All Its Worth" (it was out of print) and sent it to me with a reply to my submission, which was very kind--I was pretty young at the time...
Drawing is a skill. It is not about "Talent"--this is a myth/lie that people use when they say "I wish I could draw like you"! I know this is true because I can look back on my drawings from when I was young and hadn't developed the skill. I just had the desire to be an artist (and the stubborness to persist)...
The same is true of modeling with splines in Animation:Master. We all suck when we start out. But if we persist, we get better... Remember that when a newbie says "I wish I could model as well as..." <_>

Mark,
I did see that video, and he has good points--I think linking videos in your playlist might help--but all that matters most if you have tthe viewership to make money directly from YouTube.... I think for me, if I could use YouTube to attract fans and then target them with a DVD compilation, art book, or something along those lines...

Rodney,
all good thoughts, thanks. Another thing I worry about with pitching it, is that if I sell the series and lose control, I also lose the ability to create things myself in the world that I created! That would be intolerable--unless of course for a lot of cash ...

I have done many castings using bronze powder & resin and a silicon mold. But I love that I can skip the mold-making process and go straight to the finished part! Here is a sculpture of O'Sensei the founder of Aikido that I sculpted in Sculpy and molded and cast in the traditional manner that you described.
After I posted today, I went to the mail box and had my package from Shapeways
