  1. Aww you didnt render the other pic with three dif pics of him?

Please Kevin, stop gushing about it, you're embarrassing me [sarcasm]. Nope, I didn't render the three-angle version, maybe that will happen later.

    P.S. why no transparent visor?

I think it's really funny that you say this because as soon as I turned the transparency down (down, not off), I thought: "That's the first thing Kevin will say about this". Well, at least it wasn't the first thing ;) . Oh, and to answer the question: because I liked it better that way.

  2. You're my hero Chris!

    The cafe' has you....

Definately worth the hour render. In my heart I was hoping that this topic got pinned some day

Thanks for the entry! Cool pic!

    Lee

EDIT: Sweet! Thanks whoever pinned this!

  3. Oh no! Will, you can't enter! The rest of us need a chance ;) I was hoping that all of your threatenings to enter were just jokes to keep us on our toes!

The character already looks great. Is this a resculpt of the old one? What kind of environment are planning on putting him in?

I'm looking forward to watching your progress

  4. That's a good start Rodney! I'm excited that I finally get a chance to see some of your work!

Personally, I would take this as an oppurtunity to make this thing look as nasty as possible. I'd make it more rusty and add a bump map to it as well.

This looks really good though, definately going in the right direction!

  5. These characters are really cool Caleb! It's a creative style!

Maybe for the first try you could focus on just one bean and tell his story. I think animation for these guys would be hilarious, you could make them really goofy. Or, they could take themselves too seriously and that might be even better!

    Good luck!

  6. Thanks Yves, compliments from you are bound to make any day better!

Nice lighting, I like the atmosphere. I would suggest that you add a lightlist to TM to brighting him up a bit and give him more life (my opinion though), he looks a little unpolished right now

Thanks Stian....you know, after I read this I procrastinated working this out because I didn't know light lists. I finally sat down today and learned them. Here is a comparison of 2_08_30 with the new light list in place:

Old (EDIT: whoops, this is the Old one)

What do think? I'll probably need to do this with all scenes that TW is in, but it looks MUCH better to me

  7. Jeff's a great guy -- he helped me on a project with several other people a couple of years back -- I'm sure he won't mind if it's his model but... I guess better safe then sorry.

Yes, that would be "safe than sorry". But you're excused if English isn't your first language. ;)

    Carry on.

lol...maybe that's what he meant. You're safe until you're caught and then you're sorry :D

I'm excited to get started, I also just started a model that could benefit from this!

    Lee

  8. That's a great start! I can see it already!

You're bad luck is that I'm a Star Wars fan so I see some things that could be improved!

The split in the middle could go further back, and there's some wrinkles around the area that possibly shouldn't be there

Also...I'm interested to see how you model in the difference between the red center and white outer parts...

    Good job--keep it up!

  9. Hmm...Colin are you trying to tell me something?

Hey....you know....I think that could work.... EXCEPT

    3. The entry must be created by a single artist, and only one entry per artist is allowed per contest (NOT multi-entries).

    DISQUALIFIED...dang

However, here is the original Illustration that I lit for Kevin with the new textures and some postwork in PS:

  10. Thanks Caleb, Geoff and Candice! I was a little surprised to see this thread come back! Hey, didn't Matt post something in page 2 with a picture? Weird...

HolyDamnasterification! I had to invent a whole new word for this one. Great Job Lee!

A new word? For liddo-ol-me?! Shewt...thanks Colin! Do I have your permission to use that word?

Hopefully Kevin will model a helmet for this guy someday and we can come up with a nice illustration for him....

    Lee

  11. That looks awesome Candice!

I hope one of those stills was a wireframe, there appears to be a good amount of detail in the first pic

Is there a story behind this character?

    Great work! I'm impressed!

    Lee

  12. That looks great Kevin!

Speed modeling mechanical stuff like that is quite an accomplishment...when are you going to write a tutorial on your mechanical modeling process ;) ;)

Is that an original concept too?

    Great work, keep it up!

    Lee

  13. Shoot Mark! This is awesome! It looks like the start of an internet phenomenon to me. I'm really excited to see the animation but it almost looks as though you could get away with a 3D comic strip in between animating.

Great stuff (Krok's tunic looks great too)!

    Lee

  14. Oh yeah! Spott's tunic looks really nice!

As far as keeping the decal seperate, there's no way to do it that I know of...aside from modeling it seperately. That woud be a pain after all the work that you've done though.

Not sure what's happening with Krok's shirt either...just from the picture, it looks like the material isn't showing at all, come on material, get your head in the game!

    Looking good!

    Lee

  15. In the episode "Balance of Terror," there's a scene where Spock has to turn around and run back down a hall to rescue a bigoted officer. Nimoy trying to run in those heeled boots is really awkward. :-)

Haha! That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of. He kind of hunches over like some kind of football player...almost like Han Solo running from the Stormtroopers in Star Wars but really really funny looking.

Not very final at all. I do have a little bit of roughness on the shirts to try to capture that velour look, but probably not as much as I should. I don't even know what "gradient edge" is. :-)

It's an option on the material gradient combiners: attribute one controls your basic color and attribute two controls the edge, almost like a velvet material. It's on page 22 of the tech reference. You may or may not like the way it looks

    Lee

  16. Man, this is gonna be great!

I love the way the characters look--you got "Spott"s body type down great! Is he going to hunch a little and move really awkwardly like Spock did in the show?

I don't know how final your textures are, but have you considered adding a little roughness and/or gradient edge threshold to the character's shirts? It might make it a little more authentic, but I think it's great as it is!

You're flying through these models! Keep it up! Just out of curiosity, how are you planning on doing the voice acting? (enter 100 people saying: "You know, I do a pretty mean Bill Shatner") :D

    Good luck!

    Lee

  17. This is looking better all of the time! That last Kirk render is great! For the longest time I had a poster of William Shatner in that exact pose in my room! "Spott" is also looking great, I love those little slits that he has for eyes. I wonder if they'd look better if they curved downwards a little (like a Leonard Nemoy's eyes), that might lose the cool cartoon style, though.

Keep it up, for all our sakes!
