Although it is not covered in this article I imagine the graphic flatness and clarity of Japanese drawing was some influence in moving newspaper cartooning away from the over-detailed and over-rendered style of a Thomas Nast in the later 19th Century to the simplicity of a George "Krazy Kat" Herriman in the early 20th.
