Internet Handshake

On Netflix's "Space Force" series there is a gag where Steve Carell's character makes the absurd suggestion that there be a box that you can feel a handshake across the internet on.

I wonder if the writers know my former employer, Northern Telecom, actually demonstrated such a device in the 90s.

Either way, the problem they identify with this idea in the show is exactly the one I first thought of upon hearing of it.
