Did you add the rocks in front of the ship in photoshop?

 

it looks as though they are imbedded in the body of the craft. if you did then you should try to put the rocks on a layer and play around with the layer styles and drop shadows you could get some nice effects with the dropshadow distance..

 

hope I'm not barking up the wrong tree. it's a nice render otherwise.

Very nice use of maps to show the details.

 

There is some spline peaking visible in the nose area, that can be eliminated (or reduced) by tweaking the bias handles on them.

Space is black because there is nothing to reflect against, not because it is nessisarily dark. In fact windows on space craft that might turn to a star have to be heavily tinted to avoid blinding the crew. (of course if you are in the shadow of a planet or moon there will be less light)

 

The point of this comment is to let you know that it is ok to brightly light a space scene. Many old sci fi movies didn't do this because the ships are held up with wires and post editing is expensive. your ships look like they might have neat detail. give it more light so we can see it.

The rocks are added the hard way, particle blobbies

No doubt once I start learning compositing it'll make my rendering life much easier

I apprecieate the help though, I'll have to see what I can do for my rocks...

I tweeked the bias some, how does this look..?

I moved the lights around to try to brighten things up,

though my glow seems to have leaped up in the front - have to look at that...
