  1. Thanks guys, he's coming along a lot slower than I had hoped, forgot how time consuming mapping can be. Anyway, here's what I've got now. I think I need to go back to a brighter green but I'm liking the overall look. Obviously I still need to texture the hands, feet, ears, and tail and add some hair to the top of his hands/feet. Thoughts? Anybody got a nice banana model I can stick in his hand :)

    Kevin

I'd like to use those hair settings as grass.......that's a nifty looking monkey there...freaks me out too.....keep er going....good job..

    Mike

I've got some much better grass settings I can send you if you like

  2. Alright Martin, here you go. The long awaited Green Monkey Hair thread. He looks a bit like a chia-pet right now but I've just started. There's a lot of work to do. I'm hoping to get him done today so I can get started lighting tomorrow (the beauty of a 3 day weekend with nothing to do but spend time with the wife, watch movies, play videogames, and AM). Let me know what you think...

  3. Looks good! But is it using Muhair? It doesn't seem as "feathery" as previous examples you posted. Sort of like the ends of the hairs are too thick. Maybe it's the lighting.

Can't wait to see green monkey done! When he is, I'll transpose Mrs Yoops face on to it for her monkey model.

Yeah, it's using muhHair. I've probably got things a little too dark, especially the specular color. I was trying to get away from being so shiny but I think I went too far. Easily fixed though. It could also be that I've got the desnity up too high. Anyway, I'll probably tweak it a little more later on. I just spent too many hours yesterday working on him and I was sick of looking at him :)

  4. Ok, so the follow along aspect didn't work out too well. I've already finished the hair as you can see. I've taken a whole bunch of screen captures along the way that I just need to clean up now for the tutorial aspect. His hair could use a little bit of tuning but I think this is good enough for now. I'll hopefully have the tutorial up by today and if not definately tomorrow. Next up for a haircut is Green Monkey...

  5.

Is he going to be in a shampoo commercial?!? ;) That's some shine in his hair. Less shine more contrast/shadows for me.

    Keep it going.

Part of that is the nature of the muhHair shader, it tends to produce really shiny-shampoo-commercial-ready hair. But Nancy can also tone down the specular color, which should help...

  6. I've finally gotten around to starting this. Or at least starting to look at getting started. I'll be posting pictures as a go along and doing my best to explain my process for doing hair, including any mistakes along the way. His hair is fairly complicated so it should make a good tutorial. Anyway, here's how he looks so far...

  7. Marcel,

Very nice job on the hair styling there. That must've been a nightmare, glad you took care of it :D As far as the shading goes I'm not entirely sure why it looks like that. It's probably a combination of the colors you've set and your light setup. Is the diffuse color a pure black? It looks like it is and if it is the shader has nothing to work with, make sure there is at least a little color in there, even if it is extremely dark. Could you post a wireframe with your light setup?

I agree that a bssrdf shader would be nice (crosses fingers for V14). One thing I read recently that could help with the bump maps making things look to dry was to actually tint your bumps pink/red in your color map.

  8. Hmm... I think any of the guys are going to go with the "toned down" hair. Nancy, Woot now looks "alive!"

ummm, you can count me as another vote for the toned down color too

Very nice work so far though Nancy, he's really starting to look good.

  9. Yves has been doing an awesome job and an awful lot of work so your description isn't that much of a surprise. I'm ready and willing to start "lighting". I've even been reading through the 2nd edition of Digital Lighting and Rendering ... Just let me know when 1_05 is ready.

  10. Adding that hair image on the scalp would help get away from that stitched in toy hair look right?

Not sure i follow the "hair image on the scalp" idea, can you elaborate?

Whatever might be said about potential improvement that is one fine rendering of Woot.

    Thanks :D

Some tweaking of coloring & intensity for all characters (and sets) would be necessary to get a consistent overall style.

Kevin - sure - I'd take a crack at Woot (and I would add eyelashes to him as well).

Go for it! I agree about the color/style, we definately lack consistency right now. I noticed that Marcel was adding a nice skin bump to Nimmie Amee. We probably should do that to all of the human characters.

  11. Woots hair is lovely as well - but his hair & cap should be different colors - How about a nice golden red-haired Irish boy with freckles look for Woot (& of course to humor Ken as well)

Nancy, that's a great idea! I wonder if Kevin would let you do that? (He did Woot's texturing.) Woot would look younger and less ephemeral if he had freckles and red hair.

Woot's texturing wasn't done by a long shot so if Nancy or someone else wants to take over they are more than welcome. I would've liked to have finished him but doing hair and evetually lighting will keep me pretty darned busy for the forseeable future...

Patason Brooks textured Tin Servant... My guess (having never seen Patason but knowing that he lives in Jamaica) is that to his thinking, that skin color is fine. Works for me if it works for him. Who says everyone in Oz comes from Western Europe?

    Good point...

Yes, I assume that was the problem as shaders was set to off. I don't know if the settings inside the "shaders" option are right though but I'm not going to be doing hair any time soon. I'll wait for that tutorial before I do any!

I'll be interested to see if Woot's hat casts a shadow on his hair. I don't notice it in the picture....where the hair looks great btw (maybe the hairline is funny looking).

Are the characters getting hair eye lashes?

And Nancy, that wouldn't humor me....I hate Irish stereotypes! But I agree he might look good with red hair and especially freckles.

His hat will casts shadows onto the hair just fine, his head is tilted back towards the light, which is why you don't see any shadows. I agree the hairline is a little funny looking but I haven't figured out a way to make it look better yet. I don't think the characters need particle hair for eyelashed, that would actually be too difficult, some textured patches should work fine (I agree the characters do need those).

  12. Thanks Guys!

Looks great. I have to say it's much better than woots. Maybe it's the color....woot's seems sort of dead and purple.

On a side note, I hope servants skin color is going to be toned down abit. Is he Indian? And his lip bump maps....

Since I did Woot's hair too and I was pretty happy with it can you maybe show me what you mean? It's possible the hair shaders aren't working for you as it has happened to others and that would explain the "dead" look. Not sure why Woot's hair would look purple though since I made it brown. Could you post a rendering? If it's something else I'd like to fix it. I agree about Tin Servant's skin color. I think he looks kind of like a wrinkled up George Hamilton with that orange skin tone. It's not a bad texturing job, it could just use some tuning up. Not sure who worked on the textures for him.

That hair is awesome. I wish you would make a tut. I can't get my hair to look nearly as good as that.

I agree with Ken about the texture. Seems a little overboard.

I'm planning to do a tutorial while I work on Nick Chopper's hair. I thought about doing one for Tin Servant but decided his hair was actually too simple.

    Kevin

  13. Finally finished Tin Servant's hair. Still need to give him some particle eyebrows but that shouldn't take too long. Overall he wasn't too bad, he has probably the simplest hairstyle of any of the TWO characters. Next up will be Nick Chopper...let me know what you think.

  14. Woot's hair isn't constrainted to his head bone!

Heh, You know, I was just thinking I forgot to do that. If you are in there now Ken go ahead and add the skull cap to the head bone if you want. I won't be home for about 5 hrs.
