  1. I just tryed saving my drawings from TurboCAD 10 (3d solids) as 3ds, opened them in Wings 3D, selected all the triangles or polygons of each side (face) and pressed the backspace key to make each side a single polygon. Then exported as Hash .mdl. The result.... EXCELENT!!!!! it is what I was looking for :D:P. After I opened the mdl file all I had to do was make the lines straight instead of curvy with one click. Thats all.

  3. hi racreel,

I have one of those too, but I did not like the program it comes with to make the profiles, maybe it is updated now I'll check.

In the other hand, instead of using the app it comes with, I use JoyToKey, wich letsme even controll the mouse and assign upto three keys per button, switch profiles on the fly and back, use n number of profiles to switch to, etc. You can also plug multiple joysticks, either n50s or n52's or any other joystick.

I think I saw a page somewhere with all the keyboard shortcuts for A:M, you might want to try it, it works

    EDIT: Link to keyboard shortcuts

  4. I just bought MusikMaker2004 Deluxe fro $29 bucks ($74 everywhere) from compusa online and also the SoundPool 2004 DVD for $29. Both of these are from a comany called MAGIX. MusikMaker comes with three CDs of loops, samples and effects. MM 2004 has very good features for audio editing and effects. The SP DVD has over 10,000 loops and samples. All wav files HQuality.

Even thought these are mostly for making music they include samples and other sounds that can be used with A:M.

    I hope this info helps.

  5. I tryed with simple primitives like a cube to 3ds from TC which open just fine in wings 3d. I also modified a sphere with wings 3d that I exported from TC. Out of curiosity I modified the sphere and tighten it to make it look like a candy with a wrap, >0<, saved it as 3ds and it open perfectly in TC: the exact same thing!!!!!!!!!

I will keet trying. I did notice that when I opened the 3ds in TC I have to select "Load Keyfram info" otherwise it shows nothing on screen in either wireframe, shade view, or final render.

  6. I was playing with TC and A:M and I exported from TC as 3ds and after importing the 3ds file as model in AM I just hit the button "peak" and it looks almost exactly as the original in TC. It has few imperfections but its as good as it gets for now.

EDIT: The problem is that when I preview the render it looks very deformed even though it shows ok in wireframe.

  7. Hi,

Has anybody tried to import files created with TurboCAD 9.2??

I saved a simple 3D figure in TC, a solid, and saved it as dxf for ACAD 2000 and it did not work. Then I tryed saving it as a R13 version and it loaded something similar to what the 3D solid looks like but all deformed. I also saved the file as 3ds and then loaded it into AM and it was deformed in the same way as the dxf one. I did save it as both a solid and as surfaces when using 3ds file format.

    Any ideas???

  8. Or even better, has anybody seen something like slave mini-PCs that only have a CPU and a NIC + RAM with some ROM or firmware that allows you to use them as render farm without the need to buy whole machines??? Sortof a blade PC but different. I could only find www.littlepc.com but is not very cost effective.

  9. Well, if people used the PS2's (playstation 2) GPU to create a super computer why can't I use the GPUs of videocards to do the same? Right? or maybe I should buy lots of PS2s and make my own super rendering farm..... :)

  10. I saw the article at http://slashdot.org and here is the real thing http://film.nvidia.com/page/gelato.html.

This is supposed t to be the way I have always wanted 3D programs to render... using the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit - the one in the videocard) not the CPU.

Now, game engines grab the objects and send them to the video card and voila!!! you have great quality 3D objects, scenes, etc. using off the shelf videocards like ATI 8500 - 9800 or nVidia 4200Ti - 5800 etc.

How come a game engine can translate the 3d model and send the info to the videocard to and use almost no CPU but a 3D modeling app cannot?

Is theer a way in which a 3D modeling program can interface with the GPU the same way a game engine does??? ------ Can A:M do it????????------

Can A:M do it using WildCAt or FireGl or Quadro videocards???

  11. I know that, but the lack of resources sometimes pushes to the research of free or absolutely minimum cost and dongle free alternatives.

btw, I am still testing, and I think it is apain in the rear to use.

anyways it seemed promising, it might be easier to use in the next version. (MyGrid of course)

  12. You can do that with any gamepad or joystick.

just use JoyToKeys wich assigns any key or keys even mouse movement and clicks to any button of the gamepad. I use my playstation controllers with a $9 dollar adapter from Frys Electronics to controll the mouse and with games that do not have gamepad support.

    Nice idea.

There is also a gamepad from belkin that is controlled by your left hand. There are two versions, one with 10 buttons abd a directional pad and one witth 15 buttons and a D-pad.

    and

I didn't like the software that comes with it though, it only lets you have one profile per gamepad not a profile per app/game.

  13. I tested part of the program already.

It requires a bit of reading and time to get it right the first time.

I was not able to set it up on a secon machine. I it seems that it will take me a while before I can use multiple machines to render.

I have other things to do at work so I can only give a maximum of two hours per day so don't expect too much anytime soon.

MyGrid still looks promising so don't be dissapointed for my delay in testing it.

  14. I should add that if it works it can also be used to speed up the editing process in A:M as well as "any" other application on the computer.

I have arranged the use of 4 computers at the college for this little project. I might be able to star testing this tuesday.

This might be specially good for those that have a few old computers doing nothing better than accumulate dust.

  15. Hi,

I am a newbe in the 3D field and just bought A:M. I noticed that rendering can take quite a while.

I read about Renderman and Netrender and it seems that those cost money plus the equipment. I found a free solution + the equipment. It seems that it is possible to use processing power of multiple computers on a network to do the rendering. The software is called MyGrid. It applies the concept of grid computing and sends workloads to different machines.

    This is the link:

    http://mygrid.sourceforge.net/

It seems that it can be run on linux and windows. I just downloaded the windows version and it is very interesting. I will put this software to work at LA Valley College where I can test it. I will post more on this after testing it. Perhaps in my website at http://www.smartsaga.net .

As for the equipment part there are a couple of space saving (mini) computer systems that might do the trick. One of them is http://www.littlepc.com which sells CD-Drive-sized (5 1/4") PCs and the other one is http://www.mini-itx.com. (A very interesting project is the mini cluster http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/cluster/ .)

I think all you need is:

    A:M (of course)

    one machine running Windows

    MyGrid Software

Client PCs with linux and java(the rendering machines)

    - Can be with no HardDrive if you use a Live CD Distro of linux to reduce cost of equipment

    A small network

It is very boring to wait on my AMD 3000+ 768 RAM 2x120Gig 8MB buffer 7200 RPM UDMA/133 Radeon 9500Pro for a few frames per minute.
