Just because I've been too lazy to master it in the past doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't. Skull caps may work best in some scenarios but if particle hair will work better, go get it! For a very long time I've wanted to modify that model... (I'm not saying I'm doing that now... but the model was handy when I wanted to try a few hair tests). As far as seeing more of him, here are a few random renders just before the one I posted above: Note that the hair in the one render ended up entirely black but I was going for a slight highlight.
