plain, manila envelope

Hi all -

I've modeled the attached. Nothing too exciting, but it's proving challenging to my rudimentary skills. Thanks to Vern for his help and suggestions so far.

 

Looking for more opinions in the area of texturing. The front view is textured with a simple gaussian blur. The back view is just A:M color right now. Does it look at all like paper (and how would I improve this texture)?

 

Thanks for any input.

If you want to make it look semi-realistic, don't have it standing magically upright unless it's leaning against something. The metal clasp needs to have some depth. The tangs on those clasps are usually bend just a little, which would show just a small shadow on the paper behind the tangs. The folder looks new, make the tangs more reflective. The end of the envelope that folds over to close needs to have a semi-glossy strip along it's edge to represent the glue that most people hate to lick ;)

 

Other than that, I think the only way to reinforce realism is to have it lay down on a scale object such as a desk, show the opening and flap at an interesting angle and populate the scene with stuff like paper clips, a pen or pencil, how bout a stamp not yet attached (lying next to it on the desk, and not totally flat either- show some shadow underneath the slightly curled stamp), an old fashioned office table lamp, etc.

 

Oh boy, I've gone off the deep end :blink:

 

Even a plain old envelope can be very interesting :)

A manila envelope has an ever so slight... mottled tone... very subtle... like a slight blurry noise.

 

The one I have in front of me also is a bit of a brighter... orangey color.

 

Unless you just pulled this one out of the shrink wrap... yes... some bumps... wrinkles... crinkles... will definitely make it look real.

 

In the past... I actually crumple some paper and scan it. Don't lay the lid completely flat on the scanner. I can then pick the "best spots" and rearrange them for best effect.

 

Yes... I know this is not a "real" 3D wrinkle bump map... but quite frankly it looks wonderful.

;)

 

Bending splines works too.
