  1. MAD magazine does these kinds of parodies ALL the time, and so do other entities

Yes - MAD is taking a satirical stab with their parody. This is my point exactly. I'll be convinced the Star Trek video is parody when I hear what exactly about Star Trek he's mocking. In the trailer, I didn't see anything other than some changed names. What position does it take? What's it's "stand"? Answer that, and we'll agree.

I think the problem is that you're using common sense. Lawyers lack this entirely.

  2. I guess I don't see changing the first letter of someone's name as an automatic parody. If Fox broadcast a show called Dfriends with actors that look just like the "Friends" actors, do you think they wouldn't be sued?

People are sued all the time for "borrowing" similar ideas - not exactly copying somone else's work. Lots of major motion pictures are sued for stealing ideas from someone else's screenplays.

  3. I've been thinking more about this. At first I thought, "well, Saturday Night Live makes money by creating parodies". However I did some more research this morning, and now stand behind my original post. For one big reason - I don't think a safety film, while using clear Star Trek references, actually parodies Star Trek. It's simply using ideas.

From PubLaw.Com, "The Supreme Court accepted 2 Live Crew's song as a parody because the rap song mimicked the original to achieve its message and because it "reasonably could be perceived as commenting on the original [Oh, Pretty Woman] or criticizing it, to some degree."

So, I guess the real question is this: does your video criticize or comment on Star Trek in some way? You could perhaps make the argument that you are commenting on the acting, cheeziness, the state of modern television, etc., but I think it would be a hard sell.

As for your bosses encouraging your work - bosses, I've found, are like most everyone else in the world. They think any material can be used in any way any time by anyone. Copyright law is a beast that most people rightly don't care about.

  4. I would personally have avoided this job like the plague - it sounds like you're using copyrighted stuff for a company - which would not fall under educational "fair use" laws. Granted you're not likely to be sued, but it is possible. You'd very literally lose everything you own if that happend. Law allows for "parody" - however "Parody" for a business' safety video sounds like an very obvious violation of copyright law to me.

I'm sorry - I know that's not what you want to hear, but it's the truth, unless you live in lawless Asia.

  5. C of E? Church of England? Is that different from the Episcopal Church here in the states?

The Episcopal Church was started during the Revolutionary War, since anyone tied to an English Church (the king of England being the leader) would be seen as as traitor-ish. So, by changing the name, all was well.

That's what I've heard. I'm a proud Catholic, not Episcopal, but I think that's how it happened.

  6. I ordered the Siggraph training CD's, and for some reason, they won't play right. The first movie starts, and then when I try to move the play window (since the full screen doesn't show when it starts) the movie locks up and I'm done. Control Alt Delete. What am I doing wrong? Simply waiting does not help.

  7. As with all Hash CD's, the physical CD itself will likely serve the sole purpose of sitting in your drive as a security measure. All the files you'll actually use will change as soon as the newest version is released and you download it. Most of us will only use the stuff on the CD itself for about 3 weeks until version 12b comes out ... so to answer your question, you can order now and still download the new versions & extras later.

  8. I know the new CD's for the year won't be coming out for awhile, but I've got a suggestion - perhaps a way to pre-order so that those of us in corporate situations can pay on this year's budget? And then when the CD comes out, we're shipped our shiny new pre-paid CD with fancy new artwork stamped on the disc.

    Just a thought.

  9. I'm making a nuclear power plant model - steam needs to travel through some pipes. Having the steam travel up or down is easy with gravity, but the side and around-curves motion is the problem. John3d's examples at first made me think the moving emitter was the answer, but I'm not so sure now since a moving emitter would still give me static blobbies within my steam tubes. I'm wondering if forces are still the way to go... hmm. Good suggestions so far. Thanks to all!

  10. Hey, is it possible to have blobbies follow a path? I've got smoke travelling through a tube (which works fine with object detection turned on), and I can make the smoke go around corners with forces - but I'm wondering if there's an easier way - i.e. having the smoke follow a path, or something like that. Although that may not be possible? I'm not sure. Hence the question.

  11. EDIT: After completely uninstalling every instance of AM except 11.1, my .prj icons will now open AM. Horay! The icons still look wrong, but at least they work! Now to figure out how to make the icons appear correctly....

  12. I have had this exact problem for the last several versions. (All have been various updates of version 11). While trying to select a program to open the .prj files, selecting the Animation Master.exe file does nothing. I am unable to associate the files with the .exe file. In addition, all my .prj files no longer are displayed with an A:M icon (for me, they now all show the "piece of paper with blue lines and a red A" icon). I would imagine the qustion poster has experienced something similar. After contacting Hash via e-mail and phone, no resolution was achieved. This has been about 2 months ago.

Granted I can still open .prj files from within A:M, and even drag them onto the A:M desktop icon to open them, but they are not naturally associated with the Hash software.

Also, (if this helps anyone) when I try to open projects by double-clicking them, I am told that my project is not a valid Win32 application.

  13. I'm trying to do some neat reflections off a shiny black floor, but it seems that the "reflectivity" setting does very little actually. When I adjust this setting, I get reflections that range from "mirror-like" to "near mirror-like". I can't seem to get a duller, blurrier reflection at all. Not even a little. Any ideas?

Also, opacity on my object doesn't seem to work in reflections - the reflection is always 0% transparent even if my object is invisible.

Ok, any help will be greatly appreciated.

  14. I've got some text that flies by the camera. I thought it might be cool for the camera to shake a bit as the text flies by, and I also thought it might be nice to do this "shake" as an action rather than a simple Chor animation. However, when I make a new action, it does not seem that the camera is an item that can be used to make an action. Ideas? Suggestions? Random Insults? I'll take whatever.

  15. Thank you for the comments, Fishman! I considered hands and feet earlier, but moved away from that for speed of animation purposes. No, it's fusion, not fission. Nuclear plants create power when a neutron is "fused" to a uranium atom which causes it to split and make heat. Hopefully my dude will make it all pretty clear to the students and kids watching. The purpse of the video is to allow a virtual tour of the plant so people can see stuff they can't see in real-life since 9-11.
