  1. I've always loved comics and animation since I was a kid...although I always preferred Looney Tunes and never cared much for Disney. For me, animation is a great method of story-telling and I've never subscribed to the "well, it's a cartoon so it must be for kids" school of thought.

When I first saw the animated movie "Heavy Metal" (same as Octropos), I realised that there are no boundaries to what can be done with animation.

I also have a great fondness for Japanese anime, being inspired most by the animation on such works as "Blood:The Last Vampire", "Read or Die", "Ninja Scroll", etc.

When I got a computer, my main interest was always making art with it. I started off with Poser and fooled around with that for a while (you can see some of my stuff at this gallery if you're interested)

I wanted to animate more than anything, though, and Poser has limitations where that's concerned. I read a passing reference to Animation Master in a magazine last month, checked out the website, looked at the competition entries, and decided to buy.

I ordered A:M and have been trying to learn its "nuances" since it arrived. I need more documentation than the instruction book provides, though (maybe I'm a slow learner) as I have some projects I want to do. I know A:M can do what I want, I'm just not sure how to get it to do what I want yet.

So my inspirations are Heavy Metal:The Movie and lots of Anime.

.....and all the great stuff you guys post in the WIP and Showcase threads.

  2. Hi, guys

Does anyone know if there's a tutorial anywhere on making landscapes in A:M?

For the backgrounds in my first little project, I am planning to use painted 2D backgrounds on flats, with 3D landscape features in front of them, and where the characters are standing in the foreground.

A point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx in advance.

  3. Thanks for the reply, Paul

I had uploaded two examples from "Ninja Scroll", but had second thoughts and removed them...probably not ethical to upload screen captures to the Net.

The other effect I would want to achieve is the "flash", another common anime technique where a strob-like flash occurs behind a character.

If you have Ninja Scroll in your extensive collection, the glowing background is in the scene where Jubai and Kugero find the wrecked ship. (the sky is glowing), then after Kugero faints and wakes up, the entire background behind Jubai is glowing. The glow is intense and seeps into around the character slightly.

It is also on lots of other anime movies.

The "flash" effect is the same glow flashing on and off.

    Anyway, thanks for your suggestions.

  4. Hi, all

I've seen that rotoscoping is one of A:M's features and can be used in modelling. From what I've read, it looks very useful for creating original characters.

However, on other animation sites I have seen rotoscoping described as a bad thing...a lazy way of animating.

Since I am only just starting to dip my toes into the world of animation, the term "rotoscope" is new to me.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Thanx

  5. Hi, All

I am thinking of purchasing A:M and I'd appreciate some feedback from users.

My 3D background involves using Poser and Maya. Basically, Poser is a real nightmare when it comes to animation and Maya is too complex to learn all the features. (and I have the Personal Learning Edition, so I can't output anything without a watermark, anyway)

My aim is to be able to produce cartoon/manga style animations. I understand A:M has a specific render mode for this. I want to create my own characters and the real question is: how easy is it to create original models and cartoon style animations in A:M?

I'm just about sold from what I've read so far, I'd just appreciate some specific comments on the "toon render" and creating characters and animating them.

    thanx in advance
